Is it normal for my male cat to purr and meow at a new male kitten?

I see that Benji isn't neutered. He could be exhibiting dominance behavior by biting the neck of the new kitten. It is normal that he is following him around, licking his behind, and sniffing where the kitten has sat. Given that you will have two males in the home, I would have Benji neutered as soon as possible. When two male cats live in the same home and are intact, that can lead to aggression and marking with urine around the house due to hormones. Having them both neutered before this behaviors starts will prevent this behavior from occurring.

Hello. This is just a way for your older cat to demonstrate dominance over the younger one. It is not sexual. As the kitten matures, this will put everyone on more equal ground & the behavior will stop. Just shoo the cats apart ( don't get loud or angry because you do not want to make either cat fearful of the other ), or distract them with a toy or treat, & eventually they will learn to live peacefully with one another. This is pretty normal cat behavior. They ask for attention and then get overstimulated. With an intact male cat it could also be hormonally related. I suggest you have him neutered and likely the behavior will stop.

If you are concerned that the male cat may injure the kittens then I would recommend you keep them separated at all times. However, I will say that it is normal for older cats (usually the momma cat) to teach the young kittens discipline and proper behavior by mewing at them, bopping them and nipping at them. IT can be common for two cats to get along sometimes and not other just like children. The cats are working together to figure out perfect harmony in there environment. I would not be concerned unless you notice abnormal urination/defecation or you feel like the two cats are constantly fighting. IF they are having occasional disagreements that can just be normal pet behavior. If you feel the younger cat has a lot of energy I would recommend trying to increase play by hiding toys and treats around the house. Hope that helps

Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse. Cats can exhibit mounting behavior of other cats and objects like pillows. The behavior is generally benign (there is not penetration) unless one cat bites the back of the neck too hard (this could break the skin an cause an abscess). Most cats will not tolerate this and will let the other cat know. Certainly stop the behavior is one cat is being bullied or there is a risk of physical harm. Some play behavior can also look like mounting (with mouthing, climbing on the other cat) but it's just wrestling. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
