Why is my older neutered cat humping and meowing at my kitten?

Socks and Prince are adorable! Thanks for posting pictures! Mounting behaviors are often dominance related and not sexual. So, since Prince has now reached sexual maturity at 6 months of age, Socks may be trying to make it clear to Prince that Socks is the more dominant cat. This can be a problem if it causes fighting, but is a normal behavior. The only solution I could offer you would be to have Prince (or both cats) fixed. Once all the male hormones have left the younger one's body, this should stop. It sometimes takes a few weeks (3+) for all the male hormones to go. Now that the younger one has no more testicles, there will not be any significant testosterone production anymore. Your older fellow is a sweetie and obviously not too worried and might see it just as play. As long as they do not have serious fights, I would not worry about it.

You are correct that it is likely dominance behavior, but it could also be sexual in nature which is why his penis is becoming unsheathed. Neutering him will help with this behavior, so I would recommend having him neutered as soon as possible.

Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse. Hello. You do not say how old the kitten is, but this may just be the kitten learning how far he can push his older companion, or he is beginning to learn some dominance. Discourage the behavior by gently shooing the kitten away & distracting him with a treat or some play time with you. I have a cat that every time he sees my little dog sitting on my lap, he has to jump up & start chewing on the poor dog's ear. We then have to take turns to see who gets to sit in my lap.
