What causes my kitten to have swollen lymph nodes and gingivitis?

Hi. An enlarged lymph node usually is due to infection or inflammation in the area that lymph node drains. The blood and mucous in stool may or may not be related. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian on monday. They will do an exam, a fecal test, an oral exam, and possibly a sample of that lymph node. I would also recommend a feline FELV and FIV test. The swollen glands are probably lymph nodes. They enlarge to fight infection. Monkey probably has a dental infection causing the mouth odor and swollen glands. As long as she’s eating and feeling fine you can wait. She may be loosing her baby teeth and will get better on her own. If she’s not eating and seems sick then she needs veterinary treatment. soon. This is probably a condition also known as "Rodent ulcer", it's an autoimmune condition that is very common in cats, often it doesn't require treatment, when it is severe it is treated with steroids. it is rare to see this at such a young age, for this reason it could also be an allergic reaction to an insect bite or possibly to the kitten milk replacer, if this is what she is eating.

I recommend to discuss the lymphnode enlargement with your doctor since she has the test results. Lymphnodes can be reactive meaning they enlarge but the cause is not known. That’s very good if the aspirate of the lymphnodes did not come back as cancerous. Sometimes you never know why the nodes stay enlarged. Sometimes there can be an underlying allergy to something in the environment or food. Sometimes parasites can cause it. I recommend to discuss the continuing enlargement with the doctor and decide what makes the most sense as far as what to do next (if anything). It sounds like Lil Man's lymph nodes are swelling up. This happens when there is an infection in that area of the body. I would take him into the vet tomorrow for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, and a urinalysis to diagnose what is causing his lymph nodes to swell, and can treat accordingly.

I'm so sorry that your foster is not doing well. It sounds like she has been through a lot in her short life. Certainly, kittens that have a severe upper respiratory infection young in life can take a while to bounce back. You can perform a FeLV and FIV test at any time, but the results will have to be taken with a grain of salt at her age. The FIV test is an antibody test, so she could test positive if her mom was positive, but she may not have the virus. The FeLV test is usually a little more accurate in young kittens, but not always. The FeLV test looks for virus in white blood cells, so if her white blood cell count is low from her infection if may appear negative even if she has the virus. So while you can test at any age, you may need to repeat the tests again because of the reasons discussed above. Poor Little Bit! If it's his lymph nodes that are swollen, he could have an infection in that area causing the swelling. It could also be a virus, immune mediated disease, allergies, and even cancer though that would be rare in a cat his age.
