Why does my kitten stumble and get weak, then recover, then repeat?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 14 days old | 2 lbs

My kitten, about four months old, keeps occasionally stumbling around. This comes and goes and I don't know why. She gets so weak she can't move. She is eating well, however. I've read a lot about syndromes like this, but it comes and goes every week. I've taken her to the vet but they don't know what it is.

Some possibilities would be that Luci is periodically having hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, or that she has something like a liver shunt. Another possibility would be that she is having an atypical seizure or a very short seizure and you are witnessing the post-ictal recovery phase. If blood work has not performed that might be a reasonable next step. If a screening CBC and chemistry panel are normal, it might be worthwhile to check bile acids to help rule out a liver shunt. Finally, it might help to video an episode and show your veterinarian to see if it seems like seizure activity.

My kitten had a seizure and is lethargic. What should I do now?

If she had what appeared to be a seizure, I would place a small amount of karo syrup on the gums and get her seen right away as her sugar level may be low. This could easily cause the seizures with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Sick kittens oftentimes do not eat enough and will secondarily get hypoglycemia. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gini. There is a chance she has condition known as cerebellar hypoplasia based on your description of her behavior. She will need to see a veterinarian to determine if this is the case or if something is affecting her. For example, has she been exposed to any toxins? In the meantime, monitor her food and water intake to ensure she is still receiving enough despite the tremors. I hope this information helps!

That sounds a little abnormal and she may have been having a mild seizure. Monitor her closely for additional signs and have your vet take a look at her. Your vet can do a work up to help diagnose and then decide if treatment is needed. If it happens again, trying recording the episode so your vet can see it.

That sounds serious! Your kitten may have had a seizure or an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Both of these are highly unusual in kittens. I recommend to have her examined by your veterinarian for some bloodwork today. Best of luck.

Poor Lucy - it is possible as she may be severely dehydrated or have nerve/muscle weakness. If she is not responding to the treatment she received she should be rechecked and have blood tests in order to identify signs of infection of salt imabalances such as low blod potassium.

My kittens are lethargic and wobbly but still eating. Should I worry?

Poor kitites. Lethargy and weakness can cause pets to stagger. Numerous things oculd be causing this including: anemia (low red blod cell count), or any other underlying illness. Without any other sympotms to speak of, there isn't much else to speculate on. Hopefullyt he vet can gether more information after a thorough physical exam and possibly even testing for infectious disease (FELV/FIV). I hope that your kitties are going to be ok moving forward.
