My 8-month-old cat is unwell, shaking head and collapsing. What to do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Couti. It’s difficult to say if she has an infection, but based on what you’re discriminated it could be associated with head trauma, an infection with a virus or bacteria, liver disease or perhaps long standing effects of the panleukopenia. Becuase your other kitten passed from that disease which is contagious, it could be possible that Couti also had this disease but developed the neurologic form of it which causes intention tremors. Shaking and trembling with initiating movement. I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian to confirm or rule this out. She may need additional testing to rule out other potential causes. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Some possibilities would be that Luci is periodically having hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, or that she has something like a liver shunt. Another possibility would be that she is having an atypical seizure or a very short seizure and you are witnessing the post-ictal recovery phase. If blood work has not performed that might be a reasonable next step. If a screening CBC and chemistry panel are normal, it might be worthwhile to check bile acids to help rule out a liver shunt. Finally, it might help to video an episode and show your veterinarian to see if it seems like seizure activity.

Poor Tosio! I'm sorry to hear that she's sick. If she isn't fully vaccinated, I would be concerned that she might have an illness called feline panleukopenia, which is a very serious infectious disease of kittens that causes lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and often death if not treated promptly. It's also possible that she may have gotten into something toxic, or contracted some other type of infection. Since she sounds quite sick, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic this evening to be seen. If you're not sure where to go, try calling your regular vet's office - their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest ER or an on-call doctor for emergencies.

I wonder if maybe she has neurologic damage or did not heal after the panleukopenia. I would talk to your vet about blood work, a neurologic exam, and maybe referral to a specialist in internal medicine or neurology to determine what could be causing the shaking and loss of balance. Increased respiratory rate or changes in breathing sounds could indicate an upper respiratory infection, a nasal polyp, or possible scar tissue from previous infection.

Lucy sounds extremely ill, and requires immediate medical attention. Her symptoms are quite severe, and she could have gotten into a toxin causing these symptoms. Please take her into an ER vet immediately.

Lewis needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Weakness is never normal and can indicate many conditions ranging from an electrolyte imbalance to cancer. Lewis needs a physical exam to begin figuring out what is wrong and he will likely needs blood work +/- radiographs. Just like humans, the sooner problems are diagnosed the better the prognosis. Oh my. These are all very serious symptoms, especially for a cat. They can indicate he could have a number of things going on including: a stroke, seizure, vestibular disease or even brain cancer. He should be seen right away by your vet for diagnotic testing (i.e. bloodwork, radiographs) if you want to pursue any possible treatment options for him.
