My kitten had a seizure and is lethargic. What should I do now?

Honey or karo syrup can be placed on the gums every 30 minutes to prevent hypoglycemia, but you have to be careful not to use too much if she has trouble swallowing as it can go down into the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia. If she is not doing better in a few hours, though, I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet. Small kittens can get dehydrated very quickly, and it appears that she is very sick.

If she is having seizures she needs to be rechecked to see what is causing them. It is good that she is eating and drinking again. I would worry about a toxin or neurological problem from her past that is affecting her health

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you could get her attention and she seemed conscious during the episode, it was not a seizure. Extreme lethargy can cause her not to move very much and appear immobile. The vomiting could be causing low electrolytes and glucose which can definately cause lethargy in very young and small animals. It can also dehydrate them very quickly which can also cause lethargy. If she is vomiting, lethargic, and not eating, I would take her into see her emergency veterinarian right away. It is hard to say what Aries has without examining her first but at her age it could be a bacterial or viral infection causing the symptoms. I hope you are able to take her in soon. If Dewey starts refusing food and acting lethargic, unfortunately there is nothing you can do for him at home besides giving him a teaspoon of honey or Karo syrup before having to rush him into the vet. Newborn kittens are extremely fragile, and any problem with them should be considered an emergency. I would find another vet to see him should he start acting like his brother did before he died.

I would highly recommend bringing her back to a vet. She most likely needs some fluid and nutritional support. This can be a virus that she is fighting off but to fight it off properly she needs nutrition. Her glucose can drop very low if she does not eat and cause seizures and even death. I would recommend taking her to a vet due to her young age. I would be concerned that Sparkle could have parasites or even an infection/viral disease that is causing her to possibly have low blood sugar or not feel well. I am sorry Sparkle Is not feeling well but taking her to the vet would be the best for her.

It sounds like he is getting sick. Without additional clinical signs it is hard to say exactly what is causing his lethargy and decreased appetite but he could be starting with a respiratory virus or a gastrointestinal virus. He could also have parasites that need to be treated. If it continues than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run lab work to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. If he is unvaccinated, please discuss a vaccine plan with your vet once he has recovered from this illness.
