My kitten is hungry and has soft stools. Can I give him kitten milk?

Cows milk is not good to give to kittens because cats are lactose intolerant and it causes GI upset. Feed Tom a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Kitties can't digest human milk well. This is likely what gave your little one diarrhea. I would switch back to the KMR and start mixing in small amounts of wet kitty starter formula food. You can also mix in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help harden her stools and continue feeding her kitten only food. If he stools are not getting better after 24-48 hrs then its best to take her to your vet for a short course of antibiotics to get her bacterial flora back to normal. Hi there, sorry to hear about poor little Kunnu. Loose stools (pasty consistency) are normal for young puppies. Over feeding as well as parasites can cause very loose stools in young puppies though, some of which they can actually pick up from their mother. I like Esbilac puppy milk for new puppies, which can be ordered on the internet and generally is good on sensitive baby tummies. Is your puppy passing gas regularly? This can also be a problem. Newborn puppies can become very dehydrated quickly if they are not eating properly-if you are very concerned or your puppy is becoming lethargic I encourage you to take him in to see a veterinarian. At 10 weeks of age your kitten should be able to eat kibble just fine. You should not need to add canned food to her diet unless you want to do it occasionally as a snack/treat. You may want to moisten the food with water before feeding her. Soft food can certainly lead to softer stools but you should make sure she has been dewormed too. I hope this helps. He could have a sensitive stomach or a malabsorption problem. Unfortunately KMR isn’t a well balanced meal for him to consume after the weaning age (3-5 weeks of age), so it’s best to keep him in a high quality kitten food such as Royal Canin, Hill’s Science diet, Evo, Eukanuba or California natural by Natura. Your vet can run a test to check for malabsorption. This is something that can be treated. I would also recommend trying a probiotic for a few weeks to see if this makes a difference. Over the counter Culturelle is comparable to a lot of the pet formulated probiotics we carry in the clinic. Adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling), can also help solidify his stools. If all else fails then it’s best to go back to your vet to have a pcr fecal screening test, which is a little more in depth to check for bacterial infections that would not be detectable with just an in-hospital fecal exam. At 8 weeks your kitten can be on a completely solid diet, and if you're feeding regular cow's milk it could be what is causing the diarrhea (cats can't handle milk.) If she doesn't drink a lot and doesn't like moistened food, you can try adding in a pet fountain or other running water source that may encourage her to play or drink a bit more. If she is still having loose stools even after feeding only her regular food, a vet checkup to rule out parasites and GI upset is also a good idea. If she is trying to nurse your other cat, just separating her for a bit can help deter the behavior.

There is a possibility that she may have soft stool for the rest of her life, but not diarrhea. This will depend on where the piece of intestine was resected. This is usually no problem. As for diet, I would always recommend a good quality canned kitten food, and later as an adult, a good quality canned cat food. That is one sweet kitty. Thanks for taking such good care of her!
