My kitten has soft stools after intestinal surgery. What diet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 14 days old | 5.2 lbs

I wanted to know more about soft stools. My cat had intestinal resection and anastomosis. She is recovering well according to my vet. It has been 3 weeks since and she's been eating and drinking well, but she has softer stools than she used to. It's because her intestines are shortened by 15 inches. Are there any lifelong concerns? They said she will be fine, but since she is a kitten, she has a long life ahead of her. Any recommendations for diet? Is she getting enough nutrients?

There is a possibility that she may have soft stool for the rest of her life, but not diarrhea. This will depend on where the piece of intestine was resected. This is usually no problem. As for diet, I would always recommend a good quality canned kitten food, and later as an adult, a good quality canned cat food.
That is one sweet kitty. Thanks for taking such good care of her!
