My young kitten has seizures and is now blind. How can I help?

Sorry to hear about poor Blitzen. Seizures can have many different causes, but I would not be concerned about the tapeworm medication as a cause. Seizures can happen due to a body function not working properly, or from a problem within the brain. It is possible that the previous head injury could be the cause, but really difficult to prove and likely nothing that can be done for it now. There could also be a brain tumor, infection or some congenital defect causing this. The truth is that we often don't find the cause of the tumor, because it requires special imaging that is usually too expensive for most people. However, it's worth having a vet do an exam and possibly check the blood for any abnormalities. Sometimes we can find the cause and fix it relatively easily. If not, the vet could prescribe medication to prevent more seizures, so it's still worth the visit. I hope that helps and you get this under control soon.

Poor kitty. If her bloodwork is normal then that is unfortunately not a good indicator and in such a young kitty we have to consider the high possibility that this indicates a brain or spinal cord lesion. Some kind of trauma could have also occured to cause these seizures. IT is best to put Capser on anti-seizure medication right away to hopefully manage these better. If the seizures continue to happen at this frequency, then permanent brain damage is likely to occur. A referral to a neurologist should also be considered. An MRI or CT scan will likely be recmomended to get to the bottom of the cause of these seizures. Poor kitty. I wish you all the best with Casper moving forward. Take care.

That sounds serious! Your kitten may have had a seizure or an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Both of these are highly unusual in kittens. I recommend to have her examined by your veterinarian for some bloodwork today. Best of luck.

Poor Lizzy. I'm concerned she had a seizure, and in a senior cat that could be caused by something really serious like a brain tumor. If she did have a brain tumor, that would affect her hearing and vision. Having a seizure is really disorientating to a cat, and it will take her time to return to normal. Some possibilities would be that Luci is periodically having hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, or that she has something like a liver shunt. Another possibility would be that she is having an atypical seizure or a very short seizure and you are witnessing the post-ictal recovery phase. If blood work has not performed that might be a reasonable next step. If a screening CBC and chemistry panel are normal, it might be worthwhile to check bile acids to help rule out a liver shunt. Finally, it might help to video an episode and show your veterinarian to see if it seems like seizure activity.

If she had what appeared to be a seizure, I would place a small amount of karo syrup on the gums and get her seen right away as her sugar level may be low. This could easily cause the seizures with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Sick kittens oftentimes do not eat enough and will secondarily get hypoglycemia.
