My young cat is having seizures. What causes them and what to do?

Odie needs to see a veterinarian ASAP!! This is obviously not normal. Seizures in cats are not a good sign. Based on the fact that he is so young my guess is that he may have ingested a toxin/poison of some sort or sustained some trauma. There is nothing I can tell you to do over the internet. You have to have a diagnosis before any treatment can be offered. This is serious so please get him to a vet as soon as you can. Best wishes.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. Sorry to hear about poor Blitzen. Seizures can have many different causes, but I would not be concerned about the tapeworm medication as a cause. Seizures can happen due to a body function not working properly, or from a problem within the brain. It is possible that the previous head injury could be the cause, but really difficult to prove and likely nothing that can be done for it now. There could also be a brain tumor, infection or some congenital defect causing this. The truth is that we often don't find the cause of the tumor, because it requires special imaging that is usually too expensive for most people. However, it's worth having a vet do an exam and possibly check the blood for any abnormalities. Sometimes we can find the cause and fix it relatively easily. If not, the vet could prescribe medication to prevent more seizures, so it's still worth the visit. I hope that helps and you get this under control soon.

If your cat is having seizures, an exam with your vet or at the nearest veterinary ER is strongly recommended. Go as soon as possible. Repeated seizures can cause permanent damage or may kill. Seizures can be caused by infection, trauma, toxicity, tumors or other neurologic conditions. It is important the seizures are controlled temporarily while diagnostics determine a cause that can be treated. At 17 years old, quality of life and euthanasia may need to be discussed if the seizures cannot be controlled or a diagnosis cannot be reached.

The most common cause of seizure is epilepsy, which is basically seizure from unknown origin, it's usually treated successfully with anti seizure meds. other possibilities include intoxication, brain tumor and head trauma.

Precious needs to be examined by the veterinarian. There are many potential causes for seizures and the condition needs management with medications for the best results long term. Call your veterinarian today and they will need to check some blood work. Best of luck for little Precious.

Poor Chubbs. Seizures in dogs can be caused by a primary brain lesion, infectious disease, underlying liver problems (hepatic encephalopathy), metabolic imbalances (sodium), or in most cases they are idiopathic (no underlying cause). Chubbs needs baseline bloodwork to rule out most underlying causes of this. Once those are ruled out, then the vet will place Chubbs on anti-seizure medication to help manage his seizures and prevent permanent brain damage. It sounds like Chubbs needs to be regulated right away, especially if he is having more than 1 seizure a month and/or they are lasting for more than 2-3 minutes at a time.
