My 4-week-old kitten has scabies. What OTC treatment can I use?

I agree and would be very suspicious of scabies, fleas or ringworm. All of these conditions can affect humans as well. The flea will respond to a product like frontline that you can purchase over the counter. However no over-the-counter products are as effective against scabies or ringworm. I recommend to have the kittens examined by a veterinarian to determine the exact cause. This way they will all receive appropriate treatment and you may need to see your own human doctor. Scabies is often treated with a prescription called revolution or advantage multi. Ringworm is treated with a special dip and oral medication. I hope this helps.

There are limited medicines you can give cats from over the counter but the place to start is a bath in baby shampoo to get the scales and dandruff off. Second you can get ear mite medication and dewormer me from a local pet store. They also sell flea medicine such as advantage or frontline that is safe for over 8 weeks of age. If it is ringworm then it is contagious to people and other animals and will need a prescription from a vet for proper medicine.

You can buy Frontline spray and wipe your kitten with this. Wet a q-tip with the spray and just gently insert it into the kittens ear to wet the ear canal. Do not push it hard, do not twist it and do not try to clean the ear. If this does not work within the next few days, you will need to take your kitten to a vet for ear cleaning and treatment.

Tapeworms are killed by a medication called praziquantel, which is prescription only. A dewormer containing that can only be gotten at the vet. A great deworming medication is Drontal which kills tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. OTC dewormers will only kill roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. Personally I always recommend a deworming medication from the vet, as they are stronger and better than anything you get OTC. Drontal is safe and healthy for kittens. Bambi should get a dewormer now, and another in two weeks. After that she will need to be dewormed monthly until she is six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. It's perfectly safe to give them a deworming medication even if they don't have worms, it prevents them from occurring. I never recommend getting OTC flea and tick medications. Many brands of them, such as Hartz, are terrible products that do not work and can have serious side effects in cats. I personally recommend getting a flea and tick medication from the vet such as Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. When you make an appointment with the vet to get her vaccines, you can also get the deworming treatment as well as the flea and tick medication. I hope this helps!

Hello. There is a product called Lime Sulfur Dip that will kill just about any mites on cats. It is smelly, but very effective & very safe. You will mix one part dip in 16 parts water & dip your kitty once a week. It usually takes 3 dips to see an effect. You can also use Frontline Plus, but it does not get as many mite species as the dip does. It is not recommend you use ivermectin yourself without the guidance of a vet - it is too easy to overdose. All you need to do is apply a product called Revolution (sealamectin - a derivative of ivermectin). It is a topical spot-on treatment you would use once every few weeks until the skin is cleared. You should be able to get this from the vet. Lime sulphur dip is fine to use but since cats don't tolerate bathing that well it will probably be a fight.
