Safe ear mite treatment for a 3-week-old kitten with hair loss?

Poor kitten! I would recommend giving a Capstar tablet by mouth - this can be purchased over the counter, and will kill all fleas on the kitten within a few hours. Once she is 8 weeks old, you can apply a topical flea prevention such as Frontline or Advantage to keep this problem from happening again. I would not recommend attempting to physically remove the fleas from her ear, as you could easily damage her eardrum or cause other problems - once they are dead, they should come out on their own.

If your vet gave you the ear drops for the mites then I would follow their instructions. If a vet didn't give you the ear drops, do not use them. Pyrethrins are toxic to cats. Do not use any shampoo on a cat that doesn't say specifically on the label that it can be used in cats. Frontline is safe in cats but I would suggest using revolution since Revolution gets ear mites. There are limited medicines you can give cats from over the counter but the place to start is a bath in baby shampoo to get the scales and dandruff off. Second you can get ear mite medication and dewormer me from a local pet store. They also sell flea medicine such as advantage or frontline that is safe for over 8 weeks of age. If it is ringworm then it is contagious to people and other animals and will need a prescription from a vet for proper medicine.

If Shredder has ear mites, the lesions on the edges of his ears are likely due to ear mites as well. Olive oil is not a very effective treatment for earmites. I would recommend a prescription treatment such as Revolution or Advantage multi for cats. These will kill the mites in 1-2 applications and allow Shredders ears to heal. Bonus these medications help prevent intestinal parasites and treat fleas and heartworm as well.

To treat the mites, you can use the topical Revolution. It is labeled as safe for pregnant and nursing queens. It is applied directly to the skin on the back of the neck monthly. Pyrantel is safe to use in nursing queens. Praziquantel should be used with caution. Discuss with your veterinarian. The kittens should be dewormed at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks of age. Pyrantel is safe to use in kittens. Praziquantel should not be used in kittens less than 6 weeks of age.
