My cat has neck mites. What OTC remedies can I use to kill them?

There are a couple of different types of skin mites that can affect cats. Demodex cati can be treated with dips or with ivermectin. Notoedres cati can be treated by a number of different options including dips, ivermectin and topical products including Revolution and Advantage Multi. So, your veterinarian will need to perform a skin scraping to determine what type of mite is present in order to determine what treatment options are available.

It is not recommend you use ivermectin yourself without the guidance of a vet - it is too easy to overdose. All you need to do is apply a product called Revolution (sealamectin - a derivative of ivermectin). It is a topical spot-on treatment you would use once every few weeks until the skin is cleared. You should be able to get this from the vet. Lime sulphur dip is fine to use but since cats don't tolerate bathing that well it will probably be a fight.

Hello. You can use the lime sulfur dip, just follow the dilution instructions on the bottle very carefully. Apply the dip as best you can to the affected areas, do not get it in the eyes or mouth. You will need to watch this kitty very closely to prevent her from licking or grooming the wet dip. Once it is dried, she should be fine. Repeat the treatments as indicated on the bottle. I am sorry to hear about your cat! I would encourage getting her on a flea preventative even if you aren't seeing fleas because they can be very difficult to spot and some cats are very sensitive to flea bites and can have just one bite can make them quite itchy. In terms of over the counter products you can try, I would consider starting an omega fatty acid supplement such as Welactin, which can decrease inflammation and itching, and consider using a topical product such as Duoxo Calm mousse or spray on the area if bathing is difficult. I don't believe there are any over the counter medications that are safe to administer to a 4 week old kitten. Additionally, I'm not sure there are any that will kill scabies. Typically I use Advantage Multi or Revolution to kill scabies. You can get these from your veterinarian. Best of luck with your baby!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would caution using pyrethrin products in cats. If your vet gave you the ear drops for the mites then I would follow their instructions. If a vet didn't give you the ear drops, do not use them. Pyrethrins are toxic to cats. Do not use any shampoo on a cat that doesn't say specifically on the label that it can be used in cats. Frontline is safe in cats but I would suggest using revolution since Revolution gets ear mites. Hello, yes you can buy over the counter flea medications such as Frontline or Advantage Multu for cats and administer this to your cat in order to kill the fleas. You should also buy a product to treat your environment and get rid of the fleas. Hope this helps and best of luck.
