Why are there still live worms in my kitten's poop after deworming?

My kitten has live worms in het poop after i dewormed her for the second time. Is this normal?

This is not uncommon to see. The dewormer works by paralyzing the worms and they are sometimes only partially affected by the drug. The fact that they are coming out shows that it's working to a certain degree; and the worms will likely die soon.

No need to worry. Keep up with the deworming schedule as prescribed by your vet and she should be rid of them soon.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about your puppies. Pooping the live worms means the deworming treatment is working. They need a deworming treatment every two weeks until they are 12 weeks old. Then one every month until they are six months of age, and after that they should be dewormed once every three months. I'm sorry to hear Nittany has worms! They are no fun to find! It can be normal between wormings for them to shed the parasites. The worming doses are staggered to catch the parasites at their different stages of their life cycles to completely clear the infection. I would continue with the scheduled plan and then recheck a fecal sample two weeks after to ensure they are gone. Additionally, I would get her started on a once monthly oral heartworm preventative if she isn't already, as they contain ingredients to help prevent this in the future. Good luck!

It sounds like Koala needs another deworming treatment, but I'd have her seen by a vet. You may be using an ineffective treatment or the wrong treatment for the kind of worms she has in her intestines. I'd take her into a vet in the morning.

It could be they had worms previously and you didn't know it. It sometimes can take until there is a heavy infestation of worms for you to see them in vomit or feces. Typically only eggs are passed in the feces, and those eggs can be seen with a microscope, not the naked eye. You have to repeat the deworming treatment to kill all the worms. The first one treats the adults already present, while the second in two weeks will kill the ones that had not yet hatched at the time of the first treatment. Hopefully you will stop seeing dead worms in the next couple of days, but it means the treatment is working. Best of luck.

They may or may not be related to the deworming today, but either way they definitely roundworms! Call your vet to let them know what you saw. Chances are that the dewormer they used today will be enough to treat them. Make sure to repeat the deworming in 3-4 weeks to make sure the infection is completely taken care of!

Kitten shedding tapeworms after Strongid treatment, is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. The medication is working and due to the lifecycle of the worms, that other dose is need to kill all of them. This second dose should help kill them all and he should stop shedding the worms with a week after the last dose. I hope this helps!

My kitten has roundworms. Dewormed today. Is it working? Am I at risk?

Hello. As the dewormer works (and yes it is that fast) the worms that were inside your kitten will be passed out in the poop. This may continue to happen for the next few days. Make sure you follow the deworming protocol that your vet has suggested as the various stages of the worms need to be killed at different times, so a one-time shot won't necessarily work depending on the product. Also, roundworms can be contracted by people, and the eggs are shed through the feces, so if you are 'eating' (fecal bits on your pillow and your face goes on this) the feces then you could get the worms. The shedding period will last until the burden is gone, so I would give it a couple months. It would be very unlikely for you to contract worms through this method however. Good luck with Newt!

Sometimes the worms die and just come out like mucus in the stool, not full worms. If you gave the proper dose I’m sure it was effective. Why is my puppy passing live worms after deworming medicine?

Yes, it's very common to see the worms after giving the deworm medication. This type of deworm medication works by inhibiting the nerves in the worm. While this usually does kill the worm, they may be somewhat alive still when they are passed in the stool. The fact that the worm came out indicates that it is at-least debilitated. If this was Millie's first deworm tablet, then it's best to give another one (like drontal plus) in two weeks to make sure you get all the worms. I hope that helps.
