Why is my kitten's one eye smaller than the other? Is it microphthalmia?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! He might have been born with small eyes or the eyes got infected and were injured severely and permanently damaged. It also can be genetic or from drugs the mother received while pregnant. I wouldn't breed Mocha if this could be a genetic conditions If the eyes are painful, then they should be addressed when he is older. He may have to have the eyes removed. He likely can not see out of them anyway. If they are not painful then just leave the eyes be. I hope this helps!

Unequal pupil size could indicate a neurological issue, an ear infection, and a general infection. If the sign continues for more than a couple hours I recommend your vet nary and take a look to rule out anything that needs to be treated.

I suspect Alex has an infection. Kittens seem to be prone to both viral and bacterial eye infections and often require eye drops in order to heal. Additionally, if the infection gets bad enough, it can cause ulceration of the eye which is painful and can lead to the eye needing to be removed it not treated in a timely fashion. I recommend to call your veterinarian and have Alex seen today if possible. Hopefully it's just something that needs an eye drop! I hope this is helpful. Regardless, they need to see a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as this is likely causing significant discomfort. Cats often squint their eyes, especially if they are getting sleepy and about to nap. Now if you notice any redness of the white part of her eye, eye discharge (usually yellow green) or puffiness of her eyes, then I would get concerned about conjunctivitis and then eye drops would have to be prescribed by your vet. I would have Jupiter seen by a vet as soon as possible for this eye. Without seeing her in person, I can't say if she has any sight in that eye but she may not. This could be a case where removing the eye would be best if she is blind in that eye, but that would be up to the vet treating her to decide. I recommend taking her into a vet first thing Monday. She is quite a cutie!!

Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis and eyelid inflammation, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
