My kitten closes one eye sometimes. Is this normal or an eye problem?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From the pictures you posted it does not look that there is anything very serious going on with her left eye. Squinting the eye could be result of trauma (usually scratch from another cat) or infection. Please, keep wiping the eye and giving her soothing eye drops. If the eye is not back to normal after 5-6 days, you will have to try and get her seen by a vet.

As long as the eye looks normal and does not tear or have a discharge then I'm not overly concerned about it. Next time you go to your veterinarian with Toby have them check his eye. He could have some eyelash hairs that irritate the eye so he keeps it closed, or there may be another problem that they can see when they do the exam. If he's squinting and seems painful or the eye is red with a discharge then I would take Toby in right away to get it checked. Hi there, I'm only appreciating a small amount of eye discharge in the photograph, which could be normal after a long nap or sleep, just like in people. If Percy begins to hold his eyes closed, the eye discharge becomes yellow/green/runny, sneezing, coughing, or less interest in food- these would all be signs of a respiratory infection that may require treatment and an exam from your vet. Cats can have the morning sleep in their eyes just like us. If the squinting is not persistent throughout the day, it should be fine. If it occurs throughout the day, then she should get checked out by the vet.

This is common in cats. They often will squint one eye. As long as she downstairs have any discharge (yellow or green), swelling or continued excessive blinking (blepharospams) then she is likely displaying normal cat behavior. I can see excessive discharge in the right eye and the eye is not as open as the left one. These signs indicate something abnormal and as always with eyes I would recommend to have the eye examined by a vet. The vet will examine the different parts of the eye and make sure no foreign material present as well as stain the eye to evaluate the cornea. What you are seeing in the inside corner of Nala's eye is a normal structure called the third eyelid (or nictating membrane). However, it is not normally up as much as Nala's are in the picture. There are a few possibilities of why a third eyelid will be up more than normal. Some drugs will make them go up more, tapeworms (https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951442) can sometimes make them go up in cats, and any irritation of the eye can make them go up. Since it appears to be getting worse, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her to see if they can find a cause.
