My kitten was born with a bulging white eye. What should I do?

This eye is now blind and is likely to be painful - removal of the eye would be the kindest procedure in this case although anaesthetic is more risky at such a young age. I recommend seeking referral if your local vet is not comfortable with the anaesthetic or procedure in such a young kitten as this eye will be painful until it is removed and is at risk of rupture and serious infection

Hi Ashley. I see what you mean about the eye bulging. This cannot be treated at home, you will need to take her into a vet. Do not try to open the eye, it could cause serious damage. I'd take her into a vet asap.

Regardless, they need to see a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as this is likely causing significant discomfort. Hello. This kitten has severe infection in both eyes. This requires IMMEDIATE veterinary attention if there is any chance of salvaging her eyes. She may have poor or no vision no matter what is done, but without medical intervention, it is likely that she will have to lose both eyes. She should be examined immediately and once evaluated, treatment can be started which will probably be a combination of oral and topical antibiotics. She may need to see a veterinary eye specialist if she does not start to improve, or she may need to have the eyes surgically removed. Hopefully, with immediate attention, she can improve. Please take her to your veterinarian or closest emergency clinic right away.

It is very hard to say based on the pictures alone. There is a possibility it could be saved but he would need to see a vet in person to know for sure. If not and it's not bothering him or getting worse, he could keep the injured eye. Worst case scenario is he needs the enucleation but if the eye is painful, he will experience relief from the pain and be just fine. Good luck and kisses to the little one!

This is a classic presentation of a cat with an upper respiratory disease and conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis can be caused by a few different infections, but is commonly caused by a virus that most cats harbor and comes out during times of stress. These infections can become complicated with bacterial infections and cause more problems. Nugget's eyes appear rather infected, so I recommend taking her to the vet for an evaluation. They will be able to better inspect the eye and provide the most appropriate treatment. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the pharmacy) to help clean and soothe it. Oh boy. Felix needs to see a vet ASAP if you want a chance at saving the eye. There could be an ulcer, infection, or it could be secondary to several upper respiratory viruses. The vet will do an exam and look closely at the eye to determine what treatments and pain medications are needed.
