Why are my 3-week-old kittens' eyes bulging, shrinking, discharging?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your new kittens. I would recommend that they see a veterinarian as they are due for their first set of kitten vaccines. They may have an upper respiratory tract or just an eye infection. You can ask about the bumps on their heads at this time to see if it is anything to be concerned about or not. I can see excessive discharge in the right eye and the eye is not as open as the left one. These signs indicate something abnormal and as always with eyes I would recommend to have the eye examined by a vet. The vet will examine the different parts of the eye and make sure no foreign material present as well as stain the eye to evaluate the cornea. Hi Ashley. I see what you mean about the eye bulging. This cannot be treated at home, you will need to take her into a vet. Do not try to open the eye, it could cause serious damage. I'd take her into a vet asap.

She likely has a viral infection that is causing all the discharge. You can use a warm wet washcloth the help her stay clean, and a round of prescription antibiotics and eye ointment may be needed. Her large belly is probably due to intestinal parasites, though there are a few congenital causes that may be at play. I will warn you, that sometimes these kittens will lose an eye from the infection, and will likely have chronic infections over their lives.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor baby! He might have been born with small eyes or the eyes got infected and were injured severely and permanently damaged. It also can be genetic or from drugs the mother received while pregnant. I wouldn't breed Mocha if this could be a genetic conditions If the eyes are painful, then they should be addressed when he is older. He may have to have the eyes removed. He likely can not see out of them anyway. If they are not painful then just leave the eyes be. I hope this helps!
