What to do if my 10-week-old kitten is lethargic and losing weight?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 22 days old | 5 lbs

I have a brother and sister pair a kittens. The brother jymps all over the place and just bounces around everywhere. The little girl was doing fine but the past two days she has been very lethargic. She doesn't really move much and she has gotten really skinny. Im worried about her but can't afford to do much after the huuricane in florida. What can i do to help my kitty. Shes about 10-11 weeks hold.

Hello, sorry to hear about Jasmine. Kittens this young may suffer from intestinal parasites, upper respiratory infections and other viral infections such as FIV and FeLV. Other conditions which may make them lethargic include dietary indiscretions or ingestion of foreign matrial.

If jasmine is eating and drinking ok, without any vomiting or diarrhea she may be able to wait a little longer until you can bring her to a veterinarian. If she is otherwise not eating well, has vomiting or diarrhea, then you should consider having her evaluated soon.

Monitor for any sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, constipation, vomiting or diarrhea.

This could also be normal in a kitten as they are not always very active at that age. I recommend that you take Jade to the vet as soon as possible. From her history, there are a few things that I am concerned about. The first is intestinal parasites, she needs to be tested and treated accordingly. The other is viral infections such as panleukopenia. She may also benefit from bloodwork to check for malnutrition, anemia, kidney disease, etc. Continue to encourage her to eat wet kitten food, and check her thoroughly for fleas. I hope Jade will be on the mend soon!

My 7-week kitten is lethargic with a fast heartbeat. What should I do?

It sounds like Jenny is pretty sick. Viral infections are very common in kittens and can make them sick very fast. The high heart rate worries me that her body is struggling to maintain normal blood flow or normal oxygen levels in her blood stream. I recommend to take her into the veterinarians office asap as this sounds like an emergency. The doctor will provide supportive care (fluids, antibiotics) and may recommend a radiograph to rule out pneumonia. Take Jenny needs care fast. Best of luck.

It sounds like he is getting sick. Without additional clinical signs it is hard to say exactly what is causing his lethargy and decreased appetite but he could be starting with a respiratory virus or a gastrointestinal virus. He could also have parasites that need to be treated. If it continues than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run lab work to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. If he is unvaccinated, please discuss a vaccine plan with your vet once he has recovered from this illness.

These are certainly concerning behaviors for your young kitten. I would be suspicious of intestinal parasites causing the problem, especially if he/she has not yet been wormed. I would recommend taking your cat in to the vet to be checked out and make sure nothing too serious is going on. Hopefully it is something simple like parasites that can be treated easily.
