My unspayed kitten is howling, male cat biting. Is she in heat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Starting her heat cycle in a unspayed female cat is the most common reason for increased vocalization. Other possible causes are: she sees other cats outside (territorial), anxiety (cats outside, starting heat, changes to house hold), attention seeking, or medical issue. I would close the blinds temporarily, provide environmental enrichment (cat trees, interactive cat toys, lazer pointer, play with her) and consider spaying her. You can also consider a Vet exam to be sure it isn't a medical condition. If she is otherwise fine, I hope that is improves with time and some of the above. Have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My guess is that he is reaching sexual maturity at almost 6 months and he is intact. If there are intact female cats outside as well he is likely sensing them. I would consider neutering him to reduce the kitten population. If he is eating, drinking and otherwise fine then that is most likely the cause. Have a good day!

It's very possible that she might be - most female cats will go into heat by around 6 months of age, and this will certainly attract males to the area. I would recommend having her spayed if you aren't planning to breed her, as she will be in heat almost constantly until this is done.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. Sorry you are having this issue. Male cats do not go into heat but females do. If they are brother and sister you better get them spayed/neutered or you will end up with kittens - they will breed with each other despite being related. It could just be that Astro is happy. It could also be that Astro is getting ready to go into heat. Most cats who are in heat will exhibit a specific body posture called lordosis. Do not let Astro outside and call your vet to discuss getting her spayed. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

IF your kitten is less than 4 months old she is not likely to be in heat but even if she is you should definitely not let your male anywhere near her, she should not be bred at her age and size, you must separate them.

Cats can come into heat at five months usually at the earliest. Storm may have been small so they didn’t estimate her age correctly. Please keep her inside so she doesn’t get pregnant.
