Why is my young female cat in heat so much earlier than expected?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 6 lbs

I took in a stray cat about 2 months ago. I've been saving up to have her spayed and the Vet said she would go into heat early next year and wouldn't spay her during that time. Well as my luck goes Storm started going into heat earlier this week. Is it normal for a cat to do that so early?

Cats can come into heat at five months usually at the earliest. Storm may have been small so they didn’t estimate her age correctly. Please keep her inside so she doesn’t get pregnant. She’s too young to have kittens. After she’s done with her heat she can be spayed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Storm.
