What's the best food to help my kitten grow and gain weight?

Hi there. I would recommend feeding her a high quality kitten food until she is 9 months old. You can feed her canned food and dry food. There are several great brands of kitten food available, I like Royal Canin kitten food, Natural Balance and Wellness. I hope that helps. Kittens do the majority of their growth in the first five to six months of life but continue to grow until they are around one year old. During this time of rapid growth and maturation of their bones, it is very important to choose a complete and balanced diet with the appropriate levels of nutrients. Diets formulated for growth include those labeled for kittens or “all life stages.” Canned foods promote increased water consumption in cats, and feeding dry food exclusively or in combination with canned is also acceptable. Offering a kitten with a variety of textures early in life can be helpful in minimizing the chance of having a picky eater. Regardless of diet selection, always make diet changes gradually by mixing the old and new foods together over five to seven days and make sure to carefully measure the appropriate portions of your cat’s food. Abrupt changes have a greater likelihood of resulting in vomiting and/or diarrhea.

I would recommend feeding her a kitten formulated food, as she needs more calories, protein, and calcium that adult cats, and a kitten formulated food will provide that. Make sure she receives her vaccines, put her on monthly heartworm prevention, monthly flea treatment, and deworming treatments.

I'm so glad we were able to help you with Goldie. Whiskas is ok, but I prefer Royal Canin. I'd feed her Royal Canin kitten food. She doesn't need the chikan, tuna, or rice. Make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments, as that can lead her to not gain weight. Feline core vaccines include FVRCP (feline distemper combo) and a Rabies vaccine. If she is an outdoor cat, the FeLV vaccine (feline leukemia) should be considered. I hope this helps!

In general, I stick with the bigger name brands because they are formulated by veterinary nutritionists. These include Purina, Hills Science Diet, Eukanuba, Royal Canin etc. Choose something that says “kitten” or “all life stages” until about 9 months, then transition to adult formula. I don’t have a preference on dry or wet so whichever you and Ginger prefer. I always also tell people that if finances are a concern, mixing half high-quality and half low-quality is perfectly acceptable. As for amount, approximately 1/4-1/3 cup or 1 -1.5 can per day (split up into two or three meals ideally). This will of course increase as he grows. Best wishes to you and Ginger!

It is important That Pelly eat mostly kitten food. You can certainly supplement with meat/fish but make sure at least 75% of her daily food intake is kitten food. Whiskas is not the highest quality food but if it's your only option, then go for it. Purina, Iams, Eukanuba and Science Diet are all good brands if you can get them. Make sure Pelly is appropriately dewormed to make sure the parasites are not making him too skinny. I hope this helps.

Kittens until they are the age of 12 months should be fed a kitten food to support their growth needs. Each bag of food has a different daily allotment, so feed her according the instructions on her bag of food.
