My 23-day-old kitten has diarrhea. Is Kaopectate safe to give?

You might contact your vet to see if it is safe to increase the dose. If it is ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel, this medication can be given every 8 hours. I would continue with either her current cat food or you can do boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice for a few days, but try not to change up her food too much as that can worsen diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten that may need diagnosis by a vet include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, or panleukopenia.

Actual Kao-pectate (which contains only kaolin and pectate) is safe to use. PetCo sells it as NutriVet Antidiarrheal Liquid for cats. On the other hand the brand name “Kaopectate” is not actually kaolin and pectate but is made of the same ingredients as pepto-bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). This is absolutely TOXIC to cats and is not recommended under any circumstance. If you’d like to try something over the counter for diarrhea, and can’t get the NutriVet or aren’t sure, I’d much rather you try out a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The Prosense Dewormer packaging label says for kittens under 6 weeks of age give 1/4 teaspoon per 2.5 lbs and is not recommended for kittens under 2.5 lbs. I would ask your veterinarian for another medication that can be used in small kittens (such as pyrantel). The anti-diarrhea medication from Nutri-Vet is okay to give. Kittens are frequently born with roundworms. This is not uncommon. They get roundworms through their mother during pregnancy and during nursing. I hope this helps!

Kitties can't digest human milk well. This is likely what gave your little one diarrhea. I would switch back to the KMR and start mixing in small amounts of wet kitty starter formula food. You can also mix in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help harden her stools and continue feeding her kitten only food. If he stools are not getting better after 24-48 hrs then its best to take her to your vet for a short course of antibiotics to get her bacterial flora back to normal. Given that Shady will eat treats and has eaten a bit of tuna, then it's fine to give him his antibiotics. Keep offering him the tuna, and keep it in the spring water to get more water into him. Cats aren't naturally big water drinkers, and he may be drinking at night when you are sleeping which you won't see. You can also try soaking the treats in water for him. As for the kaopectate, that is safe to use in cats but not in cases where they have severe diarrhea. If the vet gave you the ok to use it, then they would have felt it's safe for him. Hi. Yes they are usually good at controlling the amount. The diarrhea may be normal puppy poop, but if not, i recommend getting a fecal sample in to the veterinarian to be checked for parasites. If he isnt vomiting and is growing well, no need to limit. 7ml though is a bit too much. Lol
