My 4-day-old orphaned kitten has diarrhea. How much should I feed?

Hello. At 4 weeks of age, you should be weaning these kittens onto a good kitten food. 50 ml of milk 3 times a day may just be too much for them, especially if the kittens are less than 1 pound. The other very big cause of diarrhea in kittens is intestinal parasites. I would bring a sample of the stool to your veterinarian & have it examined microscopically. The guidelines you are following are just that, guidelines. There is no amount that is an exact amount to feed each and every kitten. You will need to adjust accordingly. As long as they are not losing weight you are probably feeding enough. If you want to cut back a bit on the those with diarrhea you can do that and see what happens but if they start to lose weight you will need to increase it again. It may also be the formula that is causing the problem. Watering it down more than the label recommends sometimes helps. The most common cause of diarrhea in young kittens in intestinal parasites. Kittens can be dewormed as early as two weeks of age so you should talk to your vet about doing that. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The diarrhea is most likely from the formula she is drinking. I would not be overly concerned at this stage if she is otherwise acting fine. I would see if you can get her to start eating some of this Royal Canin BabyCat mousse. You may have to mix a little formula in with it in the beginning to get her interested in eating it. Kitties can't digest human milk well. This is likely what gave your little one diarrhea. I would switch back to the KMR and start mixing in small amounts of wet kitty starter formula food. You can also mix in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help harden her stools and continue feeding her kitten only food. If he stools are not getting better after 24-48 hrs then its best to take her to your vet for a short course of antibiotics to get her bacterial flora back to normal. Make sure they are on a good quality milk replacer such as kmr. Changing it at all between different brands or switching from powder to liguid can cause diarrhea. Increase frequency of feedings to compensate for the diarrhea. And a probiotic such as bene back may help. If constant a vet visit for fluids may be recommended. If they didn't receive colostrum or milk from mom at all they are at higher risk from infections and may not survive despite best care. Sometimes the vet can help with injecting serum from a healthy cat to boost their immune system. She's adorable! I would be a little more concerned that she might have intestinal parasites or another disease causing her diarrhea. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian if you have not taken her in already. They can check a stool sample and she may be old enough for vaccines at this point. If there does not seem to be a medical issue you could try seeing how she does on just wet or just dry food - kittens sometimes do better on one vs. the other.
