My cat has diarrhea. What are safe remedies? Is Kaopectate okay?

Hello my cats have diarrhea I was wondering once something I could give them I heard kaopectate works but don’t know where to get it

Actual Kao-pectate (which contains only kaolin and pectate) is safe to use. PetCo sells it as NutriVet Antidiarrheal Liquid for cats. On the other hand the brand name “Kaopectate” is not actually kaolin and pectate but is made of the same ingredients as pepto-bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). This is absolutely TOXIC to cats and is not recommended under any circumstance. If you’d like to try something over the counter for diarrhea, and can’t get the NutriVet or aren’t sure, I’d much rather you try out a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. Of course, if these remedies aren’t working, it’s time to see your vet to rule out parasites, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease. Best of luck to you and Walker!

I would not give human kaopectate in a kitten that young. You are better off trying pro-pectalin/probiotic paste made for animals and if the diarrhea does not clear then consult with your vet. The label instrucitons say 1cc up to every 8 hours. Given that Shady will eat treats and has eaten a bit of tuna, then it's fine to give him his antibiotics. Keep offering him the tuna, and keep it in the spring water to get more water into him. Cats aren't naturally big water drinkers, and he may be drinking at night when you are sleeping which you won't see. You can also try soaking the treats in water for him. As for the kaopectate, that is safe to use in cats but not in cases where they have severe diarrhea. If the vet gave you the ok to use it, then they would have felt it's safe for him. No, there are no over the counter medication safe for cats. You can add probiotics to the diet as this can help. They can be purchased at your vets or pet store. You may want to talk about adding cobalimine to him also. The B vitamins can be lacking with cats with diarrhea and supplementing that can help.

Kaolin/pectin should not replace adequate fluids/electrolyte monitoring or replacement therapy for severe diarrheas. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you can get a dewormer into Shadow, that would be a good start. There are many on the market that get roundworms, the most common one to plague cats. Then I would try a product called FortiFlora for cats. It is actually a probiotic, but it can help in some diarrheas, especially in cats. It comes as a box of 30 small packets, & you try to feed one per day in some wet food for a full 30 days. Give this a try & hopefully it will help with shadows problem. Take care..

You might contact your vet to see if it is safe to increase the dose. If it is ProPectalin AntiDiarrheal Gel, this medication can be given every 8 hours. I would continue with either her current cat food or you can do boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice for a few days, but try not to change up her food too much as that can worsen diarrhea. Other causes of diarrhea in a kitten that may need diagnosis by a vet include food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, or panleukopenia.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Izumi! She is very cute. I do not recommend giving Metamucil to her. I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.
