Should I give my kitten daily Diazepam for seizures or wait?

Sorry for my delayed reply. Is he really 10kg? That is a big cat! Even for a cat that size 5mg is a bit high. At the very high end of the dose he would only get 4mg. I think what you are seeing is over excitement from the high dose. Just let him "sleep it off". If he doesn't seem better in 24 hours he needs to see a vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

They can be given together but often not needed due to how they work. Phenobarbital is given to prevent seizures while diazepam is giving to stop a seizure. It does no good to administer diazepam unless there is a seizure going on. Diazepam is very short acting so it can be repeated within 5 minutes in severe cases. I would not repeated it more than 2-3 times in a row If she is still having seizures despite these medicines then she needs to be seen whether your regular vet or an ER clinic nearby. They can provide injectable seizure medication and possibly add or change to a different at home pill to control further problems.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!

I'm sorry to hear that your kitty has liver disease. Unfortunately we legally cannot provide you with doses of medication for your pet without first doing an in person examination. I would consult with the vet that diagnosed Crystal with this condition and they should be more than willing to give you the proper doses of the medication you are inquiring about. Also I would highly recommend getting Crystal on the rx diet for liver disease. Your vet can give you a prescription for this food. This is the mainstay treatment for liver disease in pets. Yes, it has some pain relief effects even though is more used as anti-anxiety medication, a muscle relaxant, an appetite stimulant, and a seizure control drug. The injectable form of diazepam is often used with anesthesia.

If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. She is having cluster of seizures that ideally should be treated by your veterinarian at the clinic/hospital. What you are seeing now is most likely ''a post ictal' phase, that means the signs (pacing, restless, seems blind and so on) in the period of time after the seizure episode. These signs could last even 24hours. The major concern is that she could go into another cluster of seizure episode and have severe secondary effect from it. I would strongly advised to have her treated at the clinic until she is completely out from these acute episodes.
