My cat has liver disease. What seizure medication dosage is safe?

Yes, I would agree with the second Vet and recommend to inject Diazepam only in case of seizure. It does not make pharmacologically and therapeutic sense to give Diazepam daily. Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, Denamarin only comes in tablet form. You could try pill pockets, or potentially crush it and mix it with a bite of canned all-meat baby food. If that doesn't work, and you're really struggling to get the medication into him, I recommend reaching out to your vet. We understand that many cats are nearly impossible to get pills into! There are other liver support options, such as milk thistle, that can come in liquid form if you need a "plan B" option. It wouldn't be quite as good as Denamarin, but better than nothing! There is a medication called Denamarin that provides general liver function support and can decrease inflammation in the liver. When families can't afford further testing, I often start this medication and recheck bloodwork values in a month to see if they are going up or down. It's still not a cheap medication, and you still need follow up exams and bloodwork but it's less than an ultrasound right off the bat. It also would cure anything, If Denamarin doesn't help, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics can be tired and blood work repeated. I'd talk through these options with your vet and see what they want to start with based on all the other information they have with her exam, etc. Wishing you the best of luck.

Hello there and thank you for using Pet Coach! There are multiple anti-seizure drugs available and some with less side effects than others. If Bailey is on Phenobarbital, Keppra may be a good option for him as this particular drug has fewer side effects and I find that it is less harsh on the liver. Switching to a different drug with less side effects will certainly help. You can also talk to your vet about prescription liver diets in addition to the Denmarin. Hepagen-C is a veterinary product that is over the counter, which we use at our clinic in conjunction with Denamarin or Denosyl. Your vet can also perform a Bile Acids test to determine how much function of the liver has been lost. A scan would certainly be recommended and there are sedative combinations and drugs that we can use that will not trigger seizures, as they are anti-seizure drugs that we use to control seizures. I would still recommend an ultrasound, but talk to your vet about the different drugs that can be used to prevent seizures while sedated. I hope this helps! I would recommend feeding a specialist diet formulated for cats with liver disease such as royal canin hepatic or hills l/d. These are high calorie, easily digestible with limited liver function and supplemented with antioxidants and liver protectants. These can be diluted and syringe fed if necessary

Sorry for my delayed reply. Is he really 10kg? That is a big cat! Even for a cat that size 5mg is a bit high. At the very high end of the dose he would only get 4mg. I think what you are seeing is over excitement from the high dose. Just let him "sleep it off". If he doesn't seem better in 24 hours he needs to see a vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

The recommend dose is 1 drop per two pounds, so Bubba should get 5 drops total. It's also recommended to divide the dose for two or more administrations per day, so I would give him three drops in the morning and two at night. I hope this helps!
