My cat is hurting. Can Diazepam be used to relieve their pain?

Actually now the recommend medication is gabapentin. Ask your veterinarian for some and give it before the visit. With this the cats are just mellow, easy to handle and not as drugged as with the other medications. Diazepam is not used much in cats now due to it causing liver problems. Apromazine can make them sedate but doesn’t reduce the aggression. I personally don’t find Xanax effective. Acepromazine and diazepam at appropriate doses should be appropriate for post operative sedation and relaxation. However, neither of these drugs provide any pain control. I would consider adding an opioid-buprenorphine is my preferred opioid in cats- but since it is not available you may want to consider hydromorphine or fentanyl (in hospital) or tramadol (at home). NSAIDs are also an option but these have no sedative effect.

Yes, I would agree with the second Vet and recommend to inject Diazepam only in case of seizure. It does not make pharmacologically and therapeutic sense to give Diazepam daily. Sorry for my delayed reply. Is he really 10kg? That is a big cat! Even for a cat that size 5mg is a bit high. At the very high end of the dose he would only get 4mg. I think what you are seeing is over excitement from the high dose. Just let him "sleep it off". If he doesn't seem better in 24 hours he needs to see a vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Gabapentin will not have any effect on this type of pain, it's a special medication for very specific types of pains, usually chronic neurological pain, it won't have any pain relief effect in this case.

I doubt diazepam would make much difference as he is already on a lot of meds. My concern would be for his liver trying to metabolise so many drugs. He could also become heavily sedated with this combination. If he is very sore i would try calling your vet to see if you could increase the does of his meds.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!
