My dog had a seizure. Can I give Valium to calm her, and is it safe?

She is having cluster of seizures that ideally should be treated by your veterinarian at the clinic/hospital. What you are seeing now is most likely ''a post ictal' phase, that means the signs (pacing, restless, seems blind and so on) in the period of time after the seizure episode. These signs could last even 24hours. The major concern is that she could go into another cluster of seizure episode and have severe secondary effect from it. I would strongly advised to have her treated at the clinic until she is completely out from these acute episodes. Any time a known epileptic starts seizing again, especially with any frequency, it's time for a vet visit asap. Likely they will do bloodwork to make sure nothing has changed since you were prescribed medications last. You did not mention any phenobarbital or potassium bromide for long term relief from seizures? Is your dog on any any antiseizure medications or just the Valium as needed? If he is not on medications currently they may very well start him on something for long term relief. If he already is-they will likely adjust the dosages. I hope this helps!

They can be given together but often not needed due to how they work. Phenobarbital is given to prevent seizures while diazepam is giving to stop a seizure. It does no good to administer diazepam unless there is a seizure going on. Diazepam is very short acting so it can be repeated within 5 minutes in severe cases. I would not repeated it more than 2-3 times in a row If she is still having seizures despite these medicines then she needs to be seen whether your regular vet or an ER clinic nearby. They can provide injectable seizure medication and possibly add or change to a different at home pill to control further problems.

I'm really sorry to hear about poor Bonnie. Unfortunately, acepromazine is not similar to valium for it's anti-seizure effects and can be dangerous to give, so I don't recommend giving it. The fact that she's having a cluster of seizures and is having difficulty resting is concerning enough that she should see a vet as soon as possible. There are other treatment options that can be initiated to help control her seizures. I hope that helps and Bonnie gets better soon.

The short answer is, yes, they can be given together however, I suggest you check with your regular veterinarian before combining any medications. They have your dog's full medical history and I do not. There may be a reason why your vet wouldn't want them given together. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. Lorazapam is an anti-anxiety drug, and it may not be appropriate for Huey in this case. It sounds like he is really struggling, and I would recommend giving your vet a call now to describe his symptoms and they can discuss a medication that may be helpful for him. Seizures is a potential side effect of general anesthesia, usually related to blood pressure drop and not adequate oxygen supply to the brain while a patient is asleep. It is often a self-limiting side-effect, so many animals will stop having seizures within a few days after general anesthesia. However, persistent, life-long seizures are also possible. It would be worth to discuss with your local vet using phenobarbital for Gin (this medication prevents seizures while diazepam only stops seizures when they occur). Also, brain MRI should be considered if the seizures are frequent and severe. Good luck. I hope Gin will fully recover soon.
