My cat squints one eye, but it looks healthy. Should I be concerned?

Cats often squint their eyes, especially if they are getting sleepy and about to nap. Now if you notice any redness of the white part of her eye, eye discharge (usually yellow green) or puffiness of her eyes, then I would get concerned about conjunctivitis and then eye drops would have to be prescribed by your vet. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From the pictures you posted it does not look that there is anything very serious going on with her left eye. Squinting the eye could be result of trauma (usually scratch from another cat) or infection. Please, keep wiping the eye and giving her soothing eye drops. If the eye is not back to normal after 5-6 days, you will have to try and get her seen by a vet.

Cats can have the morning sleep in their eyes just like us. If the squinting is not persistent throughout the day, it should be fine. If it occurs throughout the day, then she should get checked out by the vet.

Unless the watering is lasting more than a day, there is full-on squinting or rapid blinking, redness, cloudiness, or other worrisome signs, I am inclined to ignore it. If that is his only symptom, and he's otherwise acting normally, eating normally, active, etc and his face and eyes appear completely normal when he is awake, you don't need to rush him in. Give him another week or so, and if its continuing or you notice additional symptoms, get him in for an exam.

Most often, in cats, the pain is due to an ocular herpes virus infection or a scratch on the corneal surface. I suggest you take him to the vet for an examination.

I see what you mean. He could be squinting because the light is painful to his eye, and it may be he has injured his eyes or has an eye infection. Any eye problem is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet right away to get checked out. Best of luck.
