My kitten ate an Oreo. Is it toxic? What symptoms should I watch for?

Good on you for taking that away from Ava as soon as possible! There isn't a lot of chocolate in the Oreos, but I am concerned about her eating the chocolate brownie. A tiny nibble of chocolate cake would not be enough for a kitten that size to get chocolate toxicity. That was naughty of Nyx to eat the ice cream! I would first check the ingredients of the ice cream. If it doesn't contain a large amount of real chocolate or dark chocolate (as opposed to milk chocolate), there may not be enough chocolate in the ice cream to cause problems. If it does contain large amounts of chocolate or dark chocolate, rush her into a vet immediately. I would monitor her for signs of chocolate toxicity to be safe which include rapid and/or labored breathing, hyperactivity, rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, and general symptoms of illness like decreased appetite and/or lethargy. Hi there! A few crumbs of milk chocolate probably will not harm your cat. If she got a decent bit, she might have some diarrhea, but I highly doubt this will happen if it was only chocolate residue. Feel free to call your vet if you have concerns, but I think your kitty will be just fine! :)

Your kitty should be just fine! You are a great pet parent to be worried, but there is not that much chocolate in that type of cocoa. He could have loose stool from the sugar and milk, but that's it. If they have a lot of actual cocoa or chocolate, the symptoms come on pretty quickly... like minutes to an hour. Your kitty should be ok.

Oh my, that was naughty of him to eat all that! Luckily the Oreos won't contain a lot of chocolate, and if the donut wasn't chocolate either, there wouldn't be a concern about chocolate toxicity. The concern is the sugar content, which can and does cause GI upset. I can give you a home remedy to try if you see any GI upset in the form of vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
