My cat ate hot chocolate. How long to watch for poisoning symptoms?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

My cat ingested a laps of swiss miss marshmallow hot chocolate last night around 9pm-ish. Its 7:30 am now. I haven't seen him display any of the main symptoms of chocolate poisoning (the ones I am able to see personally) as yet. How long does it take for the symptoms to show up and how long should he be monitored? How long before we are in the clear? Thank you!

Your kitty should be just fine! You are a great pet parent to be worried, but there is not that much chocolate in that type of cocoa. He could have loose stool from the sugar and milk, but that's it.
If they have a lot of actual cocoa or chocolate, the symptoms come on pretty quickly... like minutes to an hour.
Your kitty should be ok.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but it doesn't sound like enough to be toxic. It depends on the concentration of the cocoa though.

In order for you to determine the potential for toxicity, I recommend you estimate the amount of cocoa they could have drank and use the chocolate toxicity calculator at this link: http://veterinaryclinic.com/chocolate/calc.html

Signs of chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, hyper-excitability, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to them to a vet for treatment/monitoring. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure they have plenty of water and that you check them every four hours for any signs of toxicity. If are fine within 12 hours, then I would not worry about them having any signs of toxicity.

I think Mirz will likely be fine. The most toxic chocolate is the unsweetened baker's chocolate. Milk chocolate and white chocolate are the least toxic. It doesn't sound like she got enough to make her sick based on what you said above. I recommend you just monitor her closely for any abnormal behavior or symptoms. My cat drank a small amount of chocolate milk. Will she be okay?

The problem with chocolate milk is that it contains both chocolate and milk. Chocolate is toxic to cats, and milk causes GI upset because cats are lactose intolerant. Cali likely will be ok if she drank a very small amount, but you could see some vomiting and/or diarrhea. If you do see that, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
