How do I feed a 4-week-old kitten gruel made from milk and food?

I am attaching a handout on orphan kittens below which may help you with your question. When feeding a milk replacer, the general rule is that kittens should be drinking 22 to 26 cc of formula per 100 grams of body weight over the course of the day. Kittens at that age should be eating more often. If she is not wanting the gruel you may have to go back to bottle feeding in between or get a supplement called Nutrical that has vitamins and calories and sugar to maintain him between feedings. Make sure he is going to the bathroom ok. You can always add more water to the food and syringe some into his mouth if needed.

You are doing a good job. I would put the food on my finger over the flat dish of food. As she’s licking I put my finger into the food to try to get her to suck/lick the food in the dish. You can feed them canned kitten food mixed with an appropriate kitten milk replacer, such as KMR. Mix them to make a gruel or slurry. Have them examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions and to deworm them. The deworming should be repeated every weeks for 3 treatments. Once they are about 8 weeks old, you can discuss vaccines or begin to rehome them.

It does take time for kittens to get used to eating out of a bowl, and you'd done the right thing by putting wet food and formula milk together. I would mix them together with some dry kitten food to make a mush. Soak the kitten food in the formula milk to make it softer. The mush should be the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of canned food and KMR you use until Oreo is eating the dry kitten food only. Keep this kitten mush out at all times, and reduce the amount you bottle feed her so she get used to eating from a bowl. You may have to stick your finger in the mush and get her to lick it off, then bring your finger closer and closer to the bowl until she is eating out of the bowl.
