Can I soften dry food for my 6-week-old kitten with milk formula?

A kitten at 8 weeks old is able to eat dry food just fine. If you want to put a little water or tuna juice on it to soften it you can but it is likely not necessary. If she will not eat the dry food you can always give her canned food. DO NOT mix it with cow's milk - that milk is not good for cats. If you must use milk you need to use kitten milk replacer. I would recommend to start weaning him off the formula and offering the cat food more and more. He is old enough to eat dry kitten food and he isn't getting what he needs with just the formula. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

At six weeks of age, he will be fully weaned and does not need formula. Keep feeding him the wet kitten food, and you can start introducing small amounts of dry kitten for him as well. Give him the same brand of dry food as the wet food. He is not too young to be adopted out. I would consider six weeks the minimum age to be adopted out. I hope this helps!

At six weeks of age, Roxy should be on her way to weaning, and you can get her used to her dry food by make a kitten mush. I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in water water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry kitten food only. Make sure she has plenty of water at all time, and it's quite easy to litter box train her. Simply put Roxy in the box after she eats, and make a scratching motion in the litter with your finger. She will pick up on it quickly.

At 10 weeks of age your kitten should be able to eat kibble just fine. You should not need to add canned food to her diet unless you want to do it occasionally as a snack/treat. You may want to moisten the food with water before feeding her. Soft food can certainly lead to softer stools but you should make sure she has been dewormed too. I hope this helps. Kitten food is actually more nutritious than KMR - KMR is really for those tiny kittens who are so little they're not yet ready to try solids on their own. So, if your kitten is willing to eat canned kitten food well, I would work on weaning her off the KMR. However, if she's refusing to eat anything for more than 1 meal in a row, then I would take her right in to your vet. Little kittens like Baby can get dehydrated and sick very quickly, so prompt medical care is important if she's not feeling well. Hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the milk you are giving is milk replacer, this should be continued until Missy is 8 weeks old. You can continue to transition her to hard kibble when she is about 8 weeks old. By that time, she should be eating hard kibble and you can discontinue the milk replacer. She is likely not drinking water as much due to getting her liquid from the wet food and milk replacer. She will begin to drink more water as you transition her to hard kibble. I hope this helps!
