My 4-week-old kitten stopped eating gruel. Should I be worried?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 9 days old

My daughter has a 4 to 5 week old orphaned kitten who just began eating kitten "gruel" (blended kitten formula and wet food) for about 2 days now. He ate at 9:30 this morning but hasn't eaten since. Is this ok and /or normal? I'm kitten-sitting for a few days and she said he's been eating every 5 to 6 hours.

Kittens at that age should be eating more often. If she is not wanting the gruel you may have to go back to bottle feeding in between or get a supplement called Nutrical that has vitamins and calories and sugar to maintain him between feedings. Make sure he is going to the bathroom ok. You can always add more water to the food and syringe some into his mouth if needed.
