How long for an elderly cat to recover mobility after a seizure?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. Hi, Sorry to hear about Jack, the episodes you describing with hypersalivation (increased salivation), shaking and urinating on himself which are happening more during the night can be seizures. I would strongly recommend to have him checked by a vet sooner than later as a frequency of few episodes in a few weeks is high and needs to be managed asap. It is always very helpful in diagnosis to have a video of the episode to show the vet so if you can do that in case another episode occurs before the vet appointment. Hope he will feel better soon.

It can take 7-10days after a seizure for everything to return towards normal and some mild twitching/seixure activity is not uncommon. There are specific diets which have some anecdotal evidence and a high protein high fat diet such as hills m/d would be worthwhile considering.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Animals can develop many different symptoms after having a seizure. This is because of the effects on the brain during a seizure. Some animals will become very lethargic and disoriented While others may become more affectionate and more energetic. If the seizures have not been addressed by a veterinarian, I would certainly recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the seizures are becoming more frequent and longer in duration, she likely needs an anti-seizure medication to prevent these from happening. If the seizures are becoming longer in duration or more frequent, brain damage could develop. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. This may be a seizure. Make sure he is in a safe place where he can't hurt himself, away from furniture or anything that can fall on him. If he seems to be recovering, call your veterinarian and let them know what happened. Keep a close eye on him, if he has another seizure on the heels of this one, then he needs to be seen by your vet right away. Sustained or repeated seizures can cause the body temperature to rise to dangerous levels and increases the risk of brain damage.

If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!

You can also have transient deficits in the post ictal (after -seizure) period that may resolve. You should bring your pet to a veterinarian for evaluation. Certainly seizures can be the result of a toxicity but, they may also be due to metabolic problems or primary neurologic issues. in addition, if he is having continual problems, there maybe treatment needed.
