Why does my Ragdoll cat's limbs stiffen and move strangely for minutes?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jack. As you probably ready have experienced, neurologic disease is unpredictable in pets. There is no way to know if or when he will regain control of his body. However, he needs to see a veterinarian. He needs a thorough examination to assess to extend of his neurological problems. He needs to be able to breathe normally, eat and drink and go to the bathroom. Cats can have blood clots that can affect one limb. He needs to be checked for adequate circulation. There is a possibility that your kitty had a seizure, or fell unconscious due to a heart condition. When you were cuddling with him, he got really excited which could have triggered a seizure or a syncope (unconsciousness due to not enough oxygen getting to the brain). I strongly suggest you have Scooter examined by your veterinarian.

Poor Maui!! I understand your concern for him. This definitely could have been a seizure, the decreased energy you are now noticing could be the post-ictal or post-seizure phase. Being completely relaxed such as during sleep can lower the seizure threshold for some animals. I would recommend that Maui be examined by your regular veterinarian. They may want to do some diagnostics (such as X-rays, blood work and a fecal exam) to rule out some conditions that may contribute to seizures. Your vet likely will not recommend any medications or treatments at this time, it is important to determine if this is a once off incident or if Maui is going to be prone to seizures long-term. I would recommend keeping a log of ahyvsusosct activity, especially any physical symptoms (such as limb paddling), and also duration of the episode.

Poor Angel! This sounds like a neurologic event/possible seizure and Angel should be seen by a vet ASAP. Keep track of these episodes, write down length, what they look like and record a video if possible. If an episode lasts more than 5 minutes take Angel to the emergency hospital right away. Keep her from hitting anything during an episode and keep away from her mouth in case she accidentally bites down.

While every pet can exhibit different characteristics, it's possible that your pet may just be very relaxed and laid back. It has been heard of for the breed to be a bit more tolerant. However, you always want to watch your pet closely to be sure that he hasn't become ill.

If you can wake her up when this occurs and she seems normal then this is probably a nightmare or dream. If you attempt to wake her and it doesn't stop I'd be concerned that this might be seizure activity. If it seems a seizure is more likely I'd recommend making an appointment to see your vet.

Sorry to hear that Sassy isn't acting right. If she seems to act completely fine after these episodes, it is highly unlikely that we are dealing with a seizure condition. Seizures are usually coupled with long periods of disorientation afterwards lasting hours to days. You may be seeing episodes similar to fainting or partial loss of consciousness. These episodes are typically associated with cardiovascular health such as a blood flow issue or a primary cardiac disease. Cats can throw clots resulting in a condition known as saddle thrombus. When this happens they tend to have very cold extremities, and also tend to be EXTREMELY painful. If Sassy does not appear to be in considerable distress and pain, this is not likely to be the case. I would definitely recommend having her examined as soon as possible to check for any sort of cardiac dysfunction. I would also make sure to have her blood drawn and to have a blood pressure checked. These will be important diagnostic tests to determine what may be happening. Hope this helps!
