My elderly cat had a seizure. What should I feed him? Is this normal?

If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jack. As you probably ready have experienced, neurologic disease is unpredictable in pets. There is no way to know if or when he will regain control of his body. However, he needs to see a veterinarian. He needs a thorough examination to assess to extend of his neurological problems. He needs to be able to breathe normally, eat and drink and go to the bathroom. Cats can have blood clots that can affect one limb. He needs to be checked for adequate circulation. There may be medications that can help him feel better. I hope this information helps!

I also do not like the fact that he randomly goes off eating. This could be secondary to all of his issues and not a big deal. Your vet can certainly run so additional blood work to make sure nothing else is going on. Or you could also get a referral to see a veterinary neurologist to run additional testing if needed. I would also talk to your vet about keeping some appetite stimulants on hand to help get him back to eating quicker than 2-3 days. I hope this helps!

This sounds very much like a seizure.Poor guy. I would try to keep him in a quiet, cozy room for tonight and try not stimulate him any more than necessary until his morning appointment. Sometimes seizures can be exacerbated by stress, so its best to keep him stress free until further testing in the morning. If you do witness another episode like this, then its really valuable to record it so that you can show your veterinarian. I hope that your fur baby Watson will be ok. If he has another seizure that seems to last more than 3-5 minutes, then its really best to take him to the ER vet instead of waiting til morning to get emergency medicine to stop the seizure and hopefully avoid permanent brain damage. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Animals can develop many different symptoms after having a seizure. This is because of the effects on the brain during a seizure. Some animals will become very lethargic and disoriented While others may become more affectionate and more energetic. If the seizures have not been addressed by a veterinarian, I would certainly recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the seizures are becoming more frequent and longer in duration, she likely needs an anti-seizure medication to prevent these from happening. If the seizures are becoming longer in duration or more frequent, brain damage could develop. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Two seizures in a 24 hour period are considered "cluster seizures," which generally require anti-epileptic (anti-seizure) medications. The post-ictal (after seizure) period can last for many hours, or even a day, and can cause many subtle behavioral changes and could even affect Blue's appetite. At this point, Blue should be examined by her vet. The vet will perform a neurologic exam and full physical exam, and may recommend blood work. Based on these results, medications may be prescribed. Until you go to the vet, try tempting Blue with canned dog food, meat-based baby food, or boiled white meat chicken and rice. I hope that she's feeling better soon!

I do not think it's related to killing those mice, Epilepsy in cats is not very common either, you will have to monitor her, if it happens again in the next couple weeks, you will need to take her to the vet in order to get it checked (full blood test).
