Is it normal for my cat to be energetic and loving after a seizure?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 months and 7 days old | 6 lbs

Why does my cat get a boost of energy 5 mins after coming out of a seizure. I’ve had her for 2 months now and she’s had 5 seizures lasting about 1-3 mins. And as soon as she comes out of them she’ll run around and then want plenty of affection.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Animals can develop many different symptoms after having a seizure. This is because of the effects on the brain during a seizure. Some animals will become very lethargic and disoriented While others may become more affectionate and more energetic. If the seizures have not been addressed by a veterinarian, I would certainly recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If the seizures are becoming more frequent and longer in duration, she likely needs an anti-seizure medication to prevent these from happening. If the seizures are becoming longer in duration or more frequent, brain damage could develop. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Considering the signs you are describing an immediate check up at your local emergency centre would be needed to see if there is any underlying neurological condition affecting Sadie (or the the other way round, if there is a gastrointestinal problem which have caused the seizures).

With these symptoms I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would have her blood tested to see if there are any abnormalities present. If she got into something toxic, these symptoms could be related as well. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start her on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Is it normal for my dog to be hyper and restless after a seizure? Mini-seizures?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Seizures are complicated and every animal is different with their seizures, as well as their 'pre' and 'post' ictal (seizure) state. Some dogs have a post ictal state that can last a day or two, so this could explain her being hyper and restless. This likely will improve as Bella 'gets used' to what the seizure feels like. If seizures are occurring one after the other, mini or full, this is considered 'cluster' seizuring, and means that you might need to address the medication. Best of luck with Bella!

How long for an elderly cat to recover mobility after a seizure?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jack. As you probably ready have experienced, neurologic disease is unpredictable in pets. There is no way to know if or when he will regain control of his body. However, he needs to see a veterinarian. He needs a thorough examination to assess to extend of his neurological problems. He needs to be able to breathe normally, eat and drink and go to the bathroom. Cats can have blood clots that can affect one limb. He needs to be checked for adequate circulation. There may be medications that can help him feel better. I hope this information helps!

My cat had a seizure. How do I know if she's okay without a vet?

If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!

Is it normal for my dog to be weak, falling, and not eating after seizures?

It is not uncommon to have 24 Hours of lethargy and “post-ictal” behavior especially after a cluster of seizures such as JJ experienced. However, it is also possible that he has something more concerning going on in his brain causing the seizures and lethargy such as encephalitis or cancer. If the behavior or seizure events continue then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to discuss further diagnostics and possible anti seizure medication. My elderly cat had a seizure. What should I feed him? Is this normal?

It can take 7-10days after a seizure for everything to return towards normal and some mild twitching/seixure activity is not uncommon. There are specific diets which have some anecdotal evidence and a high protein high fat diet such as hills m/d would be worthwhile considering.
