My cat's poop is white. Why is this happening and what should I do?

Pale, white, or gray stools may be indicators of liver disease or intestinal bacterial infections. You may want to take a stool sample as well as your cat, if the stool does not normalize over the next few days or of your kitty appears ill. The vet may want to do blood work to make sure the liver is functioning properly. If so then it is likely that your kitty has an intestinal infection that will require antibiotics to clear up.

White stool can be seen with a significant decrease in bile flow due to severe liver or gallbladder disease, but it doesn't sound like this is the case for Thumbs since he is otherwise healthy. Liver or gallbladder disease would also likely cause vomiting, decreased appetite and changes on lab work. It is more likely that the change in the color of his stool is related to diet and as long as he has been deemed healthy by your veterinarian it is not likely anything to worry about.

Although a picture of it would help determining what it is exactly, that could depend on the diet and could be completely normal (especially if kind of jelly material). It could be even a worm! If persistent that could be due to underlying malabsorption of nutrients, or gastrointestinal inflammation/infection. Poor girl. White feces can be a sign of dehydration. I would reocmmend ensuring you have easily accessible water for Snickers at all times. You should also consider getting a kitty water fountatin to encourage her to drink more. The bloody poop likely is caused by the really dry stool causing irritation as it is coming out. If the stools continue to be white after making these adjustments or if you see any more blood, then I would recommend getting Snickers seen by your vet. Sometimes even a simple diet switch from one food to another is enough to cause intestinal inflammation or bacterial imbalance and diarrhea in cats. Though his risk is low, it's also possible he could have an intestinal parasite (cannot be ruled out without a fecal test). You can try adding one tbsp of canned pumpkin to his diet for fiber. If he does not improve soon, it would be best to take him to a vet. Sometimes a short course of medication is necessary to resolve this type of diarrhea.

This is when the bile is retained in the blood which makes a dogs stools pale or putty colored. This can indicate an bile obstruction, liver or pancreatic disease. White stools can also be seen in dogs eating a raw food diet or a diet too high in calcium or if they ate something containing bone. If Gracie's stools continue to be white bring a sample and Gracie to the Vet for an exam. I wish you the best!
