My cat's back legs are weak, he ate a squirrel. Could it be rabies?

Difficulty walking could be a sign of neurologic disease, and infection would be a concern for a cat Fluff's age. Some parasites like toxoplasmosis can cause neurologic disease, as can viruses like the feline immunodeficiency virus. Difficulty walking could also be related to trauma but this might be more obvious on an exam. If the labs are not conclusive, a referral to a neurology specialist might be recommended as sometimes advanced diagnostics like an MRI and/or spinal tap are necessary for a diagnosis. If she continues to eat and drink normally and does not seem painful I'd wait for test results to come back and discuss the next step with your veterinarian.

I would be most concerned either a neurologic issue, such as a slipped disc pushing on her spine, or a blood clot lodged in the blood supply for her rear end (called Feline Saddle Thrombosis). I would recommend taking her to a vet ASAP to further evaluation.

Rabies typically presents with severe neurologic signs and aggression. The type of thing you are describing simple sounds like fear. While it may be out of the ordinary, I would not jump to the conclusion of Rabies unless you have a good reason to believe this is the case. If your cat is suddenly very weak, disoriented and unable to walk normally it is best to seek veterinary care at your vet or an ER clinic immediately. It is possible there is an injury, neruologic or muscular issue, illness, or other underlying problem that should be seen ASAP especially if it is causing disorientation and weakness.

Rabies would be unlikely at 4 weeks but there are many other developmental, viral and parasitic causes as well as weakness, fever and dehydration which could contribute. I recommend a postmortem on the other kittens and full examination of the ones you have to try and determine underlying cause. I recommend keeping them isolated from other cats and kittens to reduce potential spread

It sounds like you are describing cerebellar hypoplasia. You can find videos on YouTube to see if it looks similar. Now, if the mom died and had neurological symptoms as well, you need to be concerned about the possibility of rabies. Remember, rabies is a FATAL disease so if I would strongly suggest you take the kitten to a vet for an exam and discuss with them the situation with the mother so the appropriate steps can be taken.

These signs unfortunately require an immediate check up to rule out possible rabies infection and make sure the infection has not penetrated deeper in the muscle and bone layers (skull). The signs you described may be neurological. Further oral antibiotics may be needed.
