My cat is skittish only by the backdoor. Could it be rabies?

It kind of actually scared me when i asked if Rabies would cause my cat to not wanna be by my backdoor without being skittish/jumpy but fine around everywhere else in my house. And i was told yes, so im asking again. Could it 50-100% be a case of rabies? Wouldnt she be acting weird all over my house? Or be showing other signs by now? We also have fires going on..... she was sitting by the bsckdoor fine, then it was like something scared her within the time i saw her to in the afternoon of Friday

Rabies typically presents with severe neurologic signs and aggression. The type of thing you are describing simple sounds like fear. While it may be out of the ordinary, I would not jump to the conclusion of Rabies unless you have a good reason to believe this is the case. If your kitty is not Rabies vaccinated, I implore you to have this done as soon as possible particularly if its an outdoor cat. Hope this helps.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dilated eyes and drooling from the mouth are signs of either a neurological disease, or more likely a toxin. I would recommend getting a large box and a large thick blanket. I would suggest catching your cat with the blanket and getting him into a box, and bringing him into your vet for a check up. If he isn't vaccinated for rabies this could be a concern, as the behaviour is very strange, however as previously mentioned, a toxin is more likely. Best of luck with Autum.

Is he vaccinated for rabies? It could be a behavioral problem if coming from an outside cat to now indoor. I would make sure he has a place to sit up high and look outside. You may want to train him to walk on a leash also. I would recommend a veterinary visit if he has never been and get him fully vaccinated. My cat's back legs are weak, he ate a squirrel. Could it be rabies?

Neurologic signs like difficulty walking, unusual behavior and seizures are potential signs of rabies. If there is any concern I'd recommend taking him to a veterinarian right away. Other causes of difficulty walking could include trauma or other infectious diseases like toxoplasmosis.

These signs unfortunately require an immediate check up to rule out possible rabies infection and make sure the infection has not penetrated deeper in the muscle and bone layers (skull). The signs you described may be neurological. Further oral antibiotics may be needed. My cat died suddenly with weird symptoms. Was it rabies or poisoning?

My condolences to your friend on the loss of his or her cat. Unfortunately, without a post mortem exam it can be very difficult to determine cause of death. If he as vaccinated against rabies, it was likely not a cause. The only way to find out would be to submit brain tissue for testing. This must be done according to strict Health Department guidelines. A more likely cause was trauma, toxicity or heart disease.

My unvaccinated cat fought a stray. Should I worry about rabies?

I think the likelihood of you acquiring rabies is relatively low, however it is much higher for Tomas. I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have his rabies vaccine updated and to discuss a quarantine period if needed. Even if Tomas has been exposed to rabies he would not be able to shed the virus for at least a few weeks.
