Cat vomiting, licking bottom: Does she need to see the vet again?

It is not uncommon to have one more vomiting episode after cerenia while it is still building in her system. The constant licking may be a sign of nausea. There is no way to know how serious anything is without those test, but it is a good a sign she drank a little. I would take her food and water away for now and let her stomach rest and empty the water she just drank. After 4 hours I would try a small amount of water and a little food to see if the nausea has passed and how she handles it. If she continues to vomit, then you may want to ask about Care credit or further options to get the test done. If she is not getting any worse those medicines will last for 24 hours so it is reasonable to see how she feels by tomorrow

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Levi. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian again. He will need a thorough work up to determine the cause of all of his vomiting. I would recommend x-rays of his belly and blood work including testing for pancreatitis. Is there a chance he has eaten a foreign object such as a piece of toy? This can cause profuse vomiting. If he was recently at the vet for vomiting, and now is not eating or drinking anything, he should be seen again as this would make me concerned about the possibility of a foreign body, or pancreatitis, which would require additional therapy. If your vet didn't do x-rays or bloodwork at the previous appointment it's time to make sure there's nothing more serious going on. However, since your vet just saw Iron I would start by giving them a call with an update, in case they have other input based on their exam findings. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!

If you're not happy with how the first vet took care of things, and Ojitos is still vomiting and having diarrhea I would most definitely seek out another veterinarian for care. It could be that there is an underlying viral or bacterial illness like you suspect, and he may need hospitalization or subcutaneous fluids as well as injections to help with the vomiting in addition to any other medications to treat the underlying issue. You can try to offer a bland diet of some boiled chicken and rice, or even some low-sodium chicken broth to try and keep him hydrated/eating/drinking, however if this is continuing or he is acting very ill it is best to seek out veterinary care ASAP.

Vomiting in cats can be very difficult to diagnose the underlying cause, and often require many tests and treatment trials to find the answer. I would recommend working him up for either food allergies, or IBD. IBD would require a biopsy to diagnose. A scope is recommended as well for this. The other thing you could trial first is a diet trial for food allergies. Diet trials are very tedious and difficult to perform, as you need to feed the diet for 8 weeks, and have that the ONLY food that goes into Nigel, including medicated chews. You start with a diet like Hill's z/d or Hill's hypoallergenic. If the vomiting improves, then you slowly add in foods, one at a time, to determine what causes the allergy. Just switching foods for a week or two will not tell you if it is a food allergy. Discuss these options with your vet. If these don't work, then I would recommend a consult with an internal medicine specialist. Best of luck with Nigel!

I'm so sorry to hear that Marshall is having such problems. Unfortunately, when a cat cannot keep any food down and continues to vomit, he needs additional treatment. It is great news that all his lab tests were normal, so maybe he just needs some anti-nausea medication. Since he is unable to keep food down, he will need the medication to be given by injection (at least initially), so it will require another trip to the vet. Good luck! I would definitely keep an eye on him, and if he vomits again or doesn't want to eat still, schedule a vet appointment. Issues such as minor GI upset, underlying illness, hairballs or obstructions, parasites, etc can all be possible causes of vomiting, which is why it's important to have it checked out if it continues more than once. If Lando seems in any obvious distress or pain (vocalizing, pacing, attempting to go potty but can't, tender to touch, etc), then he should be seen sooner.
