Cat with UTI is crying in box and has diarrhea. Is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Remus! I recommend, with kittens this young, confining them to one room with their food/water and a shallow litter pan. I keep them in there until they are using the litter pan consistently. Then I let them out only when I am home but do not move the litter pan. Then once the kitten is using the litter pan in his room and the one in the main house he can me let out of the room. Then you can move the litter pan out. As for the crying when he urinating and defecating, be sure his stools aren't too hard. In some way mild vocalizing can be normal and he will out grow it. If it persists mention it to your Vet when you are in for shots. I hope this helps and I wish Remus the bestQ

You should touch base with your vet again and give them the update on Dexter. They may decide to prescribe something additional to address the diarrhea, and can discuss the pros and cons of Meloxican to determine if there's a more appropriate medication for pain while his GI tract is upset. If Dexter is spending time straining in his litterbox and crying, this definitely requires an immediate recheck with your vet to make sure Dexter isn't developing a urinary obstruction - a common condition in male cats who are prone to other urinary issues. Poor Chance! He could also be suffering from an Urinary tract infection. A lot of animals who have diarrhea will develop an UTI. What happens in some poop may get on the tip of his penis and then the bacteria will ascend up the urethra and into the bladder causing an infection. The diarrhea may just need a little more time to resolve. When you call the vet tomorrow I would just see if they can recheck him to check his bladder and urine and also to make sure he isn't becoming dehydrated. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that Duck is still so uncomfortable! Most cats show significant improvement with respect to their UTI signs within 2 days of antibiotic treatment. Since Duck is still vocalizing in the litter box, his infection may be resistant to the antibiotics being used. I recommend calling his vet because it may be necessary to perform a urine culture to determine to which antibiotics his infection is sensitive. Continue monitoring the size of his urine clumps and go to an ER vet if the clump sizes become significantly smaller or if he stops urinating altogether. I hope that Duck feels better soon!

Poor Max! It's very concerning that he is crying when urinating, and I would check him to see if he is straining while urinating and if no urine is coming out. Crying when urinating can indicate a blockage by bladder stones, and the other symptoms seen are straining and producing no urine. A blockage is a medical emergency which is fatal without treatment, and if he straining and producing no urine, you have to get him into a vet right away. There will be a vet on call in your area for emergencies, and the information to reach that vet will be on their answering machine or website. I would find a vet on call to have him seen now, if he is blocked it absolutely cannot wait until the morning.

With a 2 month old kitten crying in the litter box I would be concerned about diarrhea or even constipation. If this is the case I would recommend bringing Kajin to be evaluated at your veterinarian to make sure there is no intestinal parasites and to make sure this is what is going on. I would take Toby into the vet today. It sounds like from your description that he may have a UTI or bladder stones (frequently use of the litter box, vocalization). The vet can do routine blood tests and a urinalysis to see if he does have a UTI or bladder stones. If he has a UTI, he will need antibiotics to treat it. Bladder stones may need to be removed surgically, or can be managed with diet.
