Why is my 2-month-old kitten crying constantly in the litter box?

Poor baby! I am worried that she is having diarrhea and an increased urgency to go or severe constipation. Since she is so uncomfortable and so tiny and young, I would strongly recommend to have her seen by your vet as soon as possible. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. They will also be able to give her fluids if needed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Remus! I recommend, with kittens this young, confining them to one room with their food/water and a shallow litter pan. I keep them in there until they are using the litter pan consistently. Then I let them out only when I am home but do not move the litter pan. Then once the kitten is using the litter pan in his room and the one in the main house he can me let out of the room. Then you can move the litter pan out. As for the crying when he urinating and defecating, be sure his stools aren't too hard. In some way mild vocalizing can be normal and he will out grow it. If it persists mention it to your Vet when you are in for shots. I hope this helps and I wish Remus the bestQ

If she is experiencing a lot of pain than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. She may be just having some constipation issues but a vet could check to make sure she doesn't have a congenital malformation and/or problems with her hips or pelvis. If it is just constipation than you could add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to her diet to increase the fiber and see if that helps.

If Lola was just born within the last few days, then I would be highly suspicious of a condition called atresia aria (blocked rectum) or even fibrous tissue blocking her from being able to defecate. If you cannot locate an opening back there then it is best to take her to your vet asap. There may be some things that can be done, depending on the extent, to help her be able to relieve herself. I also suspect that the crying and moving a lot, is in response to her being backed up and not being able to go potty.

Crying can be because he’s hungry, cold, or has to go potty. Make sure you are feeding him often enough with kitten milk replacer if he is not nursing his mother. Stimulating him to pee and poop with a warm damp cloth around his tail should be done several times a day to keep him regular. Kittens can die quickly if they get cold so make sure he is snuggled in a warm place or with another animal. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would definitely recommend having Tamtam evaluated by a veterinarian. At his age there could be a congenital abnormality (abnormal anatomy that he was born with) that could be hindering him from being able to urinate/defecate normally. Intestinal parasites can also cause straining to defecate which could be presenting as straining to urinate as well, so it would also be beneficial to perform a fecal float on a sample to look for common parasites.
