My cat has pooping accidents after a pelvis injury. What can I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Loss of Bowel Control - cat. Broken pelvis from RTA. Goes in litter tray but faeces drops out throughout the day & when sleeping. Stopped around the time she went into season & for approx 4 weeks after she was neutered but has just started again in past couple of days. Any ideas on how to help her? She is a feral cat, approx 6 months old that we rescued & were hoping to rehome (animal rescue group) as extremely friendly. We have tried intestinal food as drops aren't fully formed.

Ouch, poor Maisie. Depending on how old the fracture is, she could still be healing and not have complete control over the nerves and muscles in that area. It is best to have her reexamined by your vet to check for neurologic or muscular issues that could be causing the loss of bowel control. If the causes isn't mechanical, looking toward other supplements such as a fiber supplement or probiotics may help firm up stools. It may also be that bowel control doesn't completely return due to the injury, and something such as a diaper may be needed to help prevent accidents. Talking with your vet and having a complete recheck of the area is best to see what direction to go in.

That is unfortunately a very bad sign, if she is suffering from neurological damage that is affecting the ability to pass stools then her prognosis will be very bad. you need to ask your vet regarding her pelvic, if it is fractured then this could be the cause of her not being able to pass stools and this will need to be repaired surgically ASAP.

Hello. First, thank you for rescuing this cat. You are a true hero. I would definitely contact your veterinarian about the lack of defecation in this kitty. With a broken pelvis it can be very painful for her to position herself & pass stool through the damaged area. She may need to be on stronger pain medication & also receive a stool softener to help while the pelvis heals. I would not administer an enema unless your veterinarian recommends one. Hi there and thanks for posting. Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear Kitty was lost for a few days. That had to be very stressful. Also, I am sorry to hear she came back with a few medical issues. It is hard to say what exactly is going on with Kitty without examining Kitty first, but from your description it seems like Kitty may have injured her pelvis, spine, or rear limbs that may be causing her to not urinate properly or defecate as it may be painful for her or she has some neurological deficits disabling her to have control of her bladder. She could also have a urinary tract infection causing the straining to urinate as well. I would recommend visiting a veterinarian clinic soon so she can get some x-rays and a neurological exam in addition to a regular physical exam. They may take a urine sample to check for an infection. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Kitty.

My injured dog won't pee or poop after accident. What should I do?

Please contact your vets office to discuss her progress as without a full history of all of her injuries and wounds, how much she ate or drank when she was in the clinic and how well she had been toileting before she went home it is impossible to guess whether this is expected or if it is a set back from how well she had been doing. Tehy may need to adjust her pain medications, or assist her either with enemas or manual expression of the bladder which would require an extended hospital stay until she is more stable or they may be able to demnostrate some handling and exercises to help support her balance and encourage her to toilet normally

My cat has a dislocated hip. Will his constipation and incontinence improve?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Co is constipated you should contact your vet for stool softeners. Medications can constipate. He may just not be able to figure out how to posture to urinate and defecate due to the hip dislocation. I would take him to the litter box often and support him. Hopefully that is all it is. Also be sure he isn't painful he should be on pain medications for his hip. I hope this helps!

My cat is constipated after pelvis healed wrong. Avoid re-breaking?

I'm sorry to hear about all of Co's recent struggles. He has certainly been through a lot! Lactulose would be my first suggestion as well. There is a fairly wide dosing range. So it might be some trial and error to get the stool soft enough to pass, but not to cause him diarrhea. Encourage him to drink as much water as possible (fountain water dishes, letting him drink out of a running faucet, changing the water more frequently). Extra moisture will keep him hydrated and soften the stool as well. You can also add canned food to his diet for the same reasons. Fracturing his pelvis would be a last resort, so hopefully you are on the right track and he will be more comfortable soon!

My 7-month-old cat leaves small poop around house, still uses litter?

Poor Coal! It sounds like he is having a little bit of fecal incontinence. I would have your vet take a look at his feces to make sure he doesn't have any type of parasite or bacterial infection. These can sometimes cause an increase in frequency and even sometimes a little softer stool than normal making it difficult for him to hold it in. If everything there is normal, then I would have your vet check him for any neurological problems. Your vet will be able to see if he needs any treatment for that or if any medicines can be added to help him out. I hope this helps!

I am very sorry Tom is so sick. I would recommend continue the medication your current vet gave you. However if Tom is not urinating a few times a day and defecating daily I would recommend taking him back to be re checked. Also it is important he eats and drinks daily. You might need to take the water and food to him directly
