My cat has a dislocated hip. Will his constipation and incontinence improve?

I'm sorry to hear about all of Co's recent struggles. He has certainly been through a lot! Lactulose would be my first suggestion as well. There is a fairly wide dosing range. So it might be some trial and error to get the stool soft enough to pass, but not to cause him diarrhea. Encourage him to drink as much water as possible (fountain water dishes, letting him drink out of a running faucet, changing the water more frequently). Extra moisture will keep him hydrated and soften the stool as well. You can also add canned food to his diet for the same reasons. Fracturing his pelvis would be a last resort, so hopefully you are on the right track and he will be more comfortable soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tibbs! He is super cute! I agree with the ER Vet. Constipation is a symptom of something else not a primary disease. The most common cause of constipation is kidney disease or underlying intestinal disease like IBD or cancer. I recommend full blood work including urine and a T4. Tibbs should have an enema if he is severely constipated and should be on stool softeners to help him keep his stool soft long term. I would follow up with your normal Vet tomorrow. Hello. It actually does sound like a dislocated hip. If it were an abscess or infection, it should have either healed or ruptured by now. If this is a dislocated hip, it is not life-threatening, but it will never heal to be a normal hip, either. There are options to seek veterinary help. You can see if your town or county has any kind of low cost veterinary care ( call the closest Humane Society ), sometimes churches & other civic groups will help with veterinary care, and try starting a GoFundMe page. If all this is unavailable to you, keeping Zuco indoors will be important. At some point, the joint will probably freeze, but it will never be a normal mobile joint & it will always be painful. He will probably always limp on it. Finally, you could relinquish him to a no-kill shelter where he will get the proper care he needs & hopefully find another forever home. Hip fractures cannot be immobilize with a cast - it is not an option for this kind of fractures. However, if Punti is still in pain despite anti-inflammatory medication, your local vet should be able to prescribe stronger pain killers for him that can be given alongside anti-inflammatory drugs. If that treatment does not help, hip surgery may be required to fix the break or to remove the head of the femur (depending on the type of fracture). Good luck.

It sounds as though Lil Man may be struggling to defecate and this may be causing him discomfort. I would recommend adding in Feline Laxatone and see if this helps normalize his bowel movements. With his age, if he hasn't had a veterinarian examine him in a while or have his blood tested, I would strongly recommend that you have this done in case there is something else going on systemically that is causing these symptoms. Poor guy. Unfortunately yes he will be uncomfortable for a few days, because the hardened feces likely irritated his colon and rectum area. Also if the vet had to manually evacuate his colon, which isn't uncommon, then this can cause irritation as well. Also with cats if they are constipated for too long, the colon will actually expand and become more elastic making it even harder to go potty the next go-round. So it is important to recognize when Smokey is having constipation issues right away to avoid having his colon stretch (megacolon) which could become a permanent problem for him.

At 5 weeks I would be sure he is eating canned kitten food (or dry if he can) and that you aren't still giving him kitten formula. Formula can be very constipating. If you are feeding him kitten food then he may need another day or 2 to get comfortable in his new environment to have a bowel movement. Get him on canned kitten food otherwise. If he still hasn't pooped by Monday night he should be seen by a vet Tuesday. Sooner if he becomes lethargic and stops eating. Constipation can be serious in young animals. Good luck!
