My injured cat has a spinal injury and watery poop. Will he recover?

Hi there and thanks for posting. Oh dear, I am so sorry to hear Kitty was lost for a few days. That had to be very stressful. Also, I am sorry to hear she came back with a few medical issues. It is hard to say what exactly is going on with Kitty without examining Kitty first, but from your description it seems like Kitty may have injured her pelvis, spine, or rear limbs that may be causing her to not urinate properly or defecate as it may be painful for her or she has some neurological deficits disabling her to have control of her bladder. She could also have a urinary tract infection causing the straining to urinate as well. I would recommend visiting a veterinarian clinic soon so she can get some x-rays and a neurological exam in addition to a regular physical exam. Hi there and thanks for posting on PetCoach! I'm sorry to hear Tom is having all of these health issues. Poor guy! Spinal injuries can take a while to heal and some do require surgery. Spinal injuries are also often quite painful so making sure Tom has some pain medication on board would be helpful. If no pain medication was given, you may ask your veterinarian about this. Special food can be prescribed by your veterinarian or an appetite stimulant medication can be prescribed by your veterinarian to help increase his appetite. You can also heat up the wet food at home a bit to bring out the flavor and may entice him to eat a little bit. Ticks and fleas in small young kittens can actually cause anemia (low red blood cell count) which can cause weakness and lethargy. The ticks will need to be safety removed either by you or your veterinarian. If you are unsure how to remove a tick, I have linked a video below. You may use a bath of dish soap (Dawn dish soap works well) to help get rid of flea infestation until he is old enough to be on a month flea preventative such as Revolution or Advantage. If Tom is still not doing well, I would recommend he see his veterinarian again to see what else your veterinarian would recommend. The nerve damage may have affected his ability to pass stool. I recommend getting the cat in to see your vet as he may require enemas and manual extraction of fecal material that has built up. As far as the amount of food and water, encourage him to eat and drink as much as he will take. You can offer low-sodium chicken broth and use it to wet his food to get plenty of fluid into him. He may like that better than plain water and be more willing to drink on his own. Also, try warming his food in the microwave, being careful to stir and test it to make sure it isn't too hot so he won't burn himself.

I’m so sorry to hear about Tommy! It sounds like he could have an infection, kidney disease, or a host of other possible ailments. Any kitty who has been acting this way for 3 days needs to see the vet sooner rather than later. Your vet will likely recommend some bloodwork to help determine what is wrong and offer some treatments to help him feel better. Best of luck to you and Tommy!

Poor guy. This sounds a bit more than just a bladder worm (very rare) and simple colitis. He could have a bleeding disorder (coagulopathy). I would recommend taking him back to the vet asap for a recheck and testing to see if he has a blood clotting abnormality (PT/PTT/ACT test and baseline bloodwork). He also may need radiographs to get a complete picture of his overall health status. When a cat decides to refuse food it is usually a serious illness that needs immediate medical attention in order to have any chance of turning things around. Oh my. : ( it sounds like Woody may have a serious musculoskeletal injury to his spine or hips if he can’t get up but is eating only what is near him. I would highly recommend taking him to you local vet for x-rays to start. Hopefully this is something he can recover from, but if not, you may have to discuss end of life options for him moving forward. Hi, sorry to hear that your cat got hurt! Sometimes neurologic injuries (injuries to the spine) take months to heal. You may have to feed him a soft diet and give him enemas to help him defecate for some time. Also, your vet can show your how to feel your cat's bladder and express it when necessary, usually three times daily. If he is regaining movement in his tail that is a good sign. You must be patient if you wish to save him. I have known cases that have taken 4 months to heal and regain function. It is a big job and you must be come his nurse for a while, but if he is regaining movement already that is a good sign. I cannot promise he will regain function but would not say all is lost until a few months have gone by. Good luck, I hope this helps!
