Why is my cat still peeing and having diarrhea after UTI meds?

This could be due to an infection that is resistant to the antibiotics being given or it could be something else like stones or a tumor. I highly recommend that you consider taking Tao to his veterinarian for reevaluation. Diagnostics that should be considered at this point include a urine culture to make sure that if there is an infection, you know which antibiotic would be best to use. A recheck would be a good idea as cats can often have inflammation of their urinary bladders without an infection or after an infection clears. It would be worrisome if Lolo continues to have issues with urination which would mean she may need long term management with diet and supplements to help reduce the occurrence of such episodes. Poor Chance! He could also be suffering from an Urinary tract infection. A lot of animals who have diarrhea will develop an UTI. What happens in some poop may get on the tip of his penis and then the bacteria will ascend up the urethra and into the bladder causing an infection. The diarrhea may just need a little more time to resolve. When you call the vet tomorrow I would just see if they can recheck him to check his bladder and urine and also to make sure he isn't becoming dehydrated. I hope this helps!

It may be related to the recent stress of the infection or medications that were given. I would just keep an eye on it. If it continues for 24-48 hours or if Chibi develops additional symptoms, such as poor appetite or lethargy, I would definitely have him re-examined by the vet.

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Deworm him if indicated. You can also have the vet collect a sterile urine sample to submit for urinalysis and culture to rule out UTI or stones. In the meantime, try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. Consider a veterinary probiotic, such as FortiFlora, ProViable or ProStora, to promote gut health. A pheromone product such as Feliway spray or plug in diffuser may decrease any anxiety. A small animal repellant along the border of your property will keep strange animals away and out of sight. Thoroughly clean soiled areas using an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.

The fact that he is eating and acting normally is huge and a very good thing. It could be that his GI tract has just been very upset by the antibiotics. While you gather the money for a recheck appointment, try a probiotic like Purina FortiFlora (use as directed on the box). You can also add a fiber supplement like Benefiber powder (tasteless- 1 tsp with each meal). Stay on the GI diet given by your vet as this is likely also helpful. If this seems to fix the problem, great! If not, get into the vet as soon as you are able to get other medications for the diarrhea. Best of luck to you and Mittens!

Assuming that you perhaps were referring to a urinary tract infection, your veterinarian may choose to do a longer course of the antibiotics or proceed with a culture to treat according to the culture results.
