My cat on UTI meds still straining to pee. Should I go back to vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 12 lbs

My cat was put on amoxicillin for a uti on Sunday evening. I just witnessed her squat in the litter box for an extended period of time and nothing came out. Should I bring her back to the vet tomorrow? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

A recheck would be a good idea as cats can often have inflammation of their urinary bladders without an infection or after an infection clears. It would be worrisome if Lolo continues to have issues with urination which would mean she may need long term management with diet and supplements to help reduce the occurrence of such episodes.

Hope this helps!
